Chris Porter goes solo with "Chris Porter Sports Auctions"

Chris Porter Announces the Opening of ''Chris Porter Sports Auctions''

- May 6, 2004
Hobby veteran Chris Porter, the President of Superior Sports Auctions, has announced that he's resigned his position and that a new company, "Chris Porter Sports Auctions," will commence operations on June 1st, 2004. Based in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan, the new company will concentrate on all sports collectibles with a specific expertise in cards made in the years 1880 - 1980.

Porter stated that "I had an extremely enjoyable time as the President of Superior Sports Auctions but feel that it's time for me to set out on my own. I want to thank everyone at Superior, Collectors Universe and Spectrum Numismatics and wish them all the very best in the future."

"C.P.S.A." will be both a retail business and auction company. Three catalog auctions will be held annually with regular direct and eBay sales as well. The company's first auction will be held in early October, with a consignment deadline of July 30th, 2004.

If you have interest in finding out more about the company or are interested in consigning to the inaugural auction, please call (231) 929-7864 until June 1st, when a permanent phone number will be available.

I bet he's up to the challenge that he is now "the man" instead of working for "the man"

    Best of Luck to Chris!

Anyone have any news on the state of affairs with Superior? That brand name just took a gigantic hit...Mr. Manning is probably not too happy since his firm just bought the company!!

    Ouch!

Assuming this is true, in my opinion Chris Porter was synonymous with Superior Sports. Now that he’s no longer with Superior, one has to wonder what will become of Superior? I guess time will tell, but the company that bought them from Collectors Universe really has to be sweating right now – not that Superior is now worthless, it isn’t, since it once was an established name in sports auctions, but losing Chris has to be a major blow to that company’s value. That’s the risk when buying a company that has essentially one key person running the show.

DUDE- We are on the same wavelength.

Assuming Chris has access to the Superior mailing list...why would anyone go to Superior. People consigned (and bought) with Superior for the most part because of Chris.

(I would assume its true since it is on the PSA's homepage)

Martha Stewart was convicted but her line of home furnishings is doing very well.

I thank Superior will be fine. Its about cardboard not personalities.

    I wish Chris the best.

    Loves me some shiny!

So if Chris branches off and does his own auctions and Superior maintains auctions as well, we will have more auctions into the frey. Mike Guttierez auctions ended yesterday, and yesterday I rec'd Sportscards Plus auction catalog, and a week or so ago Robert Edwards auctions ended, and before that the behemoth Mastro sports & Americana ended, then theres Hunts, Grey Flannel and a variety of others. I'm not complaining of all the choices, just the lack of funds to bid on all the stuff I want...jay

Do not forget Mile High too!

Greg Manning might go out an hire an established hobby veteran to fill his position. If they want to keep Superior up and running that is their best course of action.

Jay's post makes me wonder where all these competing auction houses will find enough quality material to continually auction. Does the market have the ability to support so many competitors?

<< <i>Do not forget Mile High too! >>

And thers Goodwin, Clean Sweep, Oser etc.. to add to the mix.
Mr. Mint has now left the auction scene, perhaps finding a steady stream of quality items led to his decision...jay
  • I wonder if Chris will offer some special seller % to drum up stock for his 1st action

I wish Chris well. He's always been great to work with.

Superior survived the loss of its founder, Greg Bussineau, and it will survive this. The Superior name is the key and they will do well as long as they have quality stuff.

    DO NOT support your statement.
