EO, I know you have the will and determination but I don't know if you can get the mighty FB. The $5 special most likely brought out a few more 9's for you to add buy with that nearing completion I think things will slow down on the availability of the keys in your final stretch to conquer such a mighty set in all PSA9 or better. i have no doubt you will get there but halloween is going to be tough.
In my mind - it's all about the 10s. I don't honestly think that you will finish your set off in 9s by Halloween. Are you going/willing to take some 8s to fill in holes? Also, are you willing to pony up for 10s? I imagine that if you start soliciting 10s with vigor - you can continue to beef up - and some of the stars you need should be fairly easy to get in 8 if you are willing to fill in holes.
I know one person who has a 1/1 PSA 10 that they are probably willing to sell/trad

Competition is fun especially if your collecting something that you like. Just don't let that competition get too expensive on eBay.
I'm still looking up at Con40 in the Nolan Ryan Master set. Watch out though, if I stay employed through to October it might get interesting.
Have fun,

Collecting Nolan Ryan cards (68-94)
the race has been over for a long time now . no one will knock FB out of first unless he chooses to let them. If you have watched the set building going on for the last year He has spent the money on 10's allowing others to pick up the 9's at huge prices . After the 3rd 9 hits ebay he picks it up for a fraction of the cost of the first 2. However when a 10 hits he is the premier bidder most of the time .
1.) I would first close off my set for viewing (if it hasnt been done already)
2.) I would have a friend list all the PSA 9s and 10s that EOMINT needs to jump into first and let him bid his a$$ off on them.
3.) Once the cards are sold...open the set back up, delete the cards, and make a hefty deposit at the bank.
To the guys who want me to plug my holes w 8s, I WILL NOT DO IT! This set will remain pure, it will not be tainted by fuzzy corners lol...
This thing is a beauty, it will never be sold, I will keep it as I do all my cards and pass them on to my kids later on in life. I'm only 30 and dont have kids yet, but I do know that if my dad had kept his cards instead of using them for target practice for his bee bee gun i would have loved it! 52 mantles with bee bee holes ...makes me want to cry.

Isn't that a little harsh?
This hasn't turned into a Hatfields and McCoys situation has it?
Not trying to step in a minefield here, it just seemed like a all in good fun post, unless I missed something between the lines.
FB seems like a pretty cool guy from the posts I've read over the past year or two, and Eric just seems to be a little impatient with his quest to finish a top shelf 72 set.

I never said you were overpaying for the final cards you need.
I was just saying if I was FB...I would use your quest as a oppurtunity to maximize my profits.
Timing is everything..right?
I misread step 2), I thought it read "let a friend bid EO's a$$ off" not "let a friend sell the cards and let EO bid his a$$ off".
my bad, got to learn how to read.
Sorry,

Andy Montero did the exact thing you are suggesting when big bidder PSUinNYC came on the scene . He cashed out and bought back the cards for a fraction of what he sold them for. However the wild card in this case is that with this set for EO & FB sentimental value far out weighs the obvious economic benefits of what you are suggesting to them

Well, Eric - from an outsider's perspective, then, I just can't see you knocking FB off anytime soon. That is AWESOME that you are staying on strictly 9s - but I feel to see any plausible scenario by which you could even catch up to a 9.00 average weighting by Halloween. Each hole in your set is probably worth a good .01 or something silly like that. There won't be too many 10s out there - and, as someone who has been building an 8 or better set for over 5 years now - I can attest that those last few cards will haunt you and cause you to annoy the heck out of every dealer/friend/collector imaginable in the final chase for those last few cards.
Best of luck-
ms

Tony-
I never said it is or should be anyone's "only goal". Please do not put words in my mouth.
In fact your choice of having your cards graded in SGC slabs clearly illustrates this point.

It is one thing to sneak up on the Bear and shoot him. Not easy but do able. Your approach of screaming at him, getting his attention and then charging with a switch in hand, is a valid approach but one that might make it more challenging. Now, I'm sure he knew you were clsoing in anyway, but a bold move to announce it. In our case, Mike has no prayer. Not now, not next year, or the year after. He will have to wait until the top sets are scattered to the wind I'm afraid.
I will vote for FB for this year. Only because as a "Gamesman" myself, I don't think you can plug enough of the holes fast enough. If you were to take a few "Fuzzies" then maybe. Without it, I don't think so. For 2005. I see Vegas has the current odds as EVEN.
Good Luck,
Fuzz
Frank is Babe Ruth and I'm Barry Bonds (ex the roids)...it is DESTINY!!!
I thinks it's cool that the gauntlet has been dropped. Nothing like laying it right out in front for all to see.
However, I'll be rooting for Frank only because I like the colors of his icon better.
Let the games begin!!!!

ps) If you can find the Blue and Schaal IA's in 9 nq before Halloween (or even whenever), you deserve a magic carpet ride.

CHEERS!!
Yes - I've got a pretty nice 72 set that I've been building slowly and steadily over the years and yes - I've been watching Eric climb from 25th spot to 16th, to Top 10 and now he is on the verge of taking over the #2 spot - leaving nothing between us but about a .55 set rating.
I'll be honest... I don't expect to be able to hold onto this title forever. It might be Eric, it might eventually be Chris Renaud. Heck - it could eventually be someone who hasn't even started this set yet. But, for the couple of years that I've held it - its been fun!
But, back to whether it'll be Eo or Meo in the fall...
There are currently around 8 cards that still don't have a PSA 9 graded in the 72 set - I won't even count cards where the 1 of 1's are in mine or someone elses set. But, lets just suppose that those 8 cards remain without a 9 by the fall. The set will be at 9.03 or 9.04 GPA with a set rating of 8.94. He needs to get within 3 cards of completion for a 9.00 set rating. So, without 8’s – its going to be tough.
Although… the 72’s have been increasing in pop very quickly lately – so, you never know…
Good luck! A little competition never hurt anyone!

could not be said any better
after the 5 $ special i expected to see the first nines for some of the truly tough cards.......it hasn't happened. i can't recall EVER seeing any of those cards meeting the centering criteria for PSA 9 let alone overall condition. it should be noted that it can be a VERY fine line between a PSA 8 and a PSA 9.
it's fun to watch eric's dogged determination and frank's steady progress develop into two INCREDIBLE sets. both frank and eric have provided TREMENDOUS gains for me in my quest to climb the 72 mountain, while i know that i will never reach the lofty height of a 9.00 set rating, frank's words may prove prophetic one day a guy like renaud or even PSUINNYC could seize the top spot but for now stay tuned for an epic battle!!! good luck guys
I forgot about PSUINNYC (Brian Long) for the moment. He's currently at around 84 - 85% complete with a lower GPA than Eric but I think that he's working on too many sets to really concentrate on knocking off either one of us at the moment.
Eric - you should thank me on the Koosman IA. While I originally made a decent offer on the card when I knew that he had it - he turned me down. When I was in his shop, Bob told me that since it was a 1/1 he was going to put it on eBay - I told what I felt the results would be on the auction and that I would be the 2nd runner up. I told him that nobody was paying more than you these days on 72 PSA 9's that you needed. So, it looks like he reached the same conclusion and made the deal.
Howitallbegan - absofrigginlutely dead on... and there is definitely some sentiment but not enough to mortgage the house.

pc- if eric bought frank out it would kind be like winning the title on a forfeit and he still wouldn't be at 100%
