The most you ever spent on an ebay lot?

We've all seen the big lots on ebay that appear to be either scams or mostly hype. Sometimes it's obvious that the seller bought a lot of the cards off ebay and then hyped up their resale value ("you could get $1,200 for this, easy...(even though I only paid $80")). There's also the frequent vintage lots full of low grade stars and commons...and the seller generally doesn't specify the number of commons. They also don't mention the cards' condition even though they happily quote the beckett high book value.

Despite all that, these lots can go for a few grand and the winner often has a high feedback rating.

I'm curious if anyone here ever dropped a ton on a lot and how they made out...if they made out.

For those who made out ok, was it with a seller who rarely (if ever) sold big lots? Some of these sellers run a few of these a week. Even though I've never bought from them, common sense tells me that there has to be something in it for them. I don't know too many card dealers whose goal is to make their buyers rich.

Never more than $1000, but frequently over $500. Only had one problem, with a pre-sale where the dealer declared bankruptcy before the product went live. The $300+ transactions usually go smoother than the small $ transactions.

    hahahahahhaa.

    OK seriously.

I dropped the 3K on that football lot AND had I known it was "that" good would have also dropped the 3K on the baseball lot. BUT it is a lot of work. I have only "recouped" about $300 of that 3k. I knew going into it it was not going to be an "overnight" thing. Was it worth 3K, yes it was. Of course I also had the guys address and he was about 15 mins away. image

Now I have also dropped $2 and $3 hundred dollars on lots that if done right will also recoup my $. But for them to be $1200 etc. lots I would have to sell everything in the box for "Hi" value. And as you know thats not going to happen.

There have been afew $500 plus that I have also won and been "happy" with.

It is a "crap" shoot though and you have to make sure you ask questions of the seller, cross check his (or her) pricing (those Hall of Gold cards that sell for $150!!!! hehehehhehe) AND (at least I do) ALWAYS save the webpage for "future" reference. It saves all the text and pictures to YOUR hard drive.

I will NEVER EVER buy into "Dutch" auctions. I mena yes they usually are only "$5" but it is has NEVER been worth it. Although with my inventory Im actually thinking about doing one.

My "best" find with regards to amount paid to what received was a Buy it Now for about $350. There was a 300 (due to thickness probably 200 cards) count box full of GU and a Binder with at least 20 9 card pages full of GU and Autos. You figure "book" is $8 to $15 dollars a card on average.

You do the math. Agan selling them though is another "beast".

Im working on one more "lot" with a friend that has a Jordan rookie among others. He is buying a house and his wife is preggers. After that I will more then likely begin to sell in ernest. AND Im still working on a co-workers mother (that sounds bad) on a great load of 1950 BB. And they looked sharp.

I already have a stack of 20 plus cards to whisk away to PSA. (yes I will still use them)

    So lets see.

Yes there are good deals out there. You also have to remember that even if the card looks like it went through a blender if it is old enough and a decent player there are people that still may want it.

I dont have "bottomless" pockets but I got enough $$ so if I did one or two bad ones It would hurt that bad. If you only have "X" dollars and you want to buy a lot I would be really careful. You shoot your wad of money get burnt (it CAN happen) and then you get upset.

I hope that helped. Feel free to ask some more questions and or PM/Email me.
