multiple bids

i have something on auction right now, and it has 4 bids on it.. but all 4 bids are from the same bidder, and the item is still at starting price.. why would somebody do this? do they keep changing their mind as to how much they should bid?

Maybe he's just out-thinking himself and he's afraid to get outbid... or on second thought, maybe he's just mentally unstable and he thinks you'll send 4 copies of the item if he wins!!!

Looks to me like an inexperienced bidder. Maybe they think that their higher bid will show and thought that they did something wrong the first time the rebid.

Yes, I think that's what they're doing: increasing their max bid. I've often seen 2 bids from the same person, but never 4!

I have a friend who bids like that. He says he does it to "scare" off other bidders when they see a lot of bids on an item. I love it when someone has multiple bids on an item and then I bid and my bid is higher than their 3-5 bids; it makes me feel like Superman.

I think you need to get outside a little more.

I've seen people do this if there is a reserve price. they'll bid multiple times trying to figure out the reserve price. In some cases they'll hit the reserve, retract their bid (see another thread on bid retractions) and then wait til the end to try and snipe for the reserve price, assuming it hasn't been met already.
