need help on $20 gold piece!!!!

i posted this in the us coins but it seems no one will answer me....i think its because i am a nebie and no very little about coins. anyway,my grandfather passed and we found 2 tin boxes of coins....one had silve and the other had gold. he has some $5,$10 and $20 dollar gold pieces..very old and were stashed away or hidden. they were in a toolbox burried behind alot of junk that i know has not been moved in 20 plus yrs. he has this $20 gold coin that is very shiney on both sides and looks almost new.i would like to know if this one coin(1854-0 liberty $20 dollar coin) contains an ounce of gold and is worth that amount(current price of gold) or what. i cant find any price guides on the internet and would like to know what it is wort and would anyone want it...thanks!!!

    Hello Allways looking,
    Welcome to the Boards.
Here is a PCGS price Guide Link to find a Guide for the 1854-O
    Liberty $20 Price Guide

Mabey no one would tell you a price because the 1854-O is so rare that the PCGS Price guide only has prices for VF & EF @ 55,000 115,000 !!!

If it is an authentic 1854-O $20, it's worth about $250,000.

If it is shiny, there is a pretty good chance that it's a replica.
  • i have just got online and was at "coinworld" today and the dealer was very, very interested and was doing everything he could to buy this coin.........now i know why!!!!!he called a company and they want me to send the coin to them to have it graded.......are you guys just messing w/me because i am a newbie at this or is that coin worth that much....i know some guys like to mess w/newbies. if you are not kidding, what do i do w/it? call a coin magazine or somone who grades them...i have no idea!!!

    alwayslooking,

The prices that you were quoted for a $20 Gold 1854-O are real. You need to tlak to someone who can authenticate it for you. One way might be to call PCGS and talk to David Hall or Mike Sherman, if you can reach them, and ask for advice. Telephone # 1-800-447-8848. Good luck and I hope it is real.image
