A Tale of 3 1953 Bowman Color Lockmans PSA vs GAI

A GAI 8 1953 Bowman Color Whitey Lockman #128 sold tonight for $2426.99 ( Auction Link)

In the past month or so...2 other PSA 8 1953 Bowman Color Whitey Lockman #128 sold for $7,100 & $6,700 respectively (both PSA cards were also sold on eBay).

My opinion is that the market did not have confidence in this card crossing over to a PSA 8 or did want to take the gamble. In addition, I would guess some are wondering why this card was not crossed over to begin with. I would think it would be worth the extra couple of bucks to at least try it once or twice...right?

Any one care to share any additional thoughts?

John B.

Is it possible that tonites card closed lower in part because 2 potential bidders had already found theirs? It certainly has happened before.

John - perhaps the question should be what is a PSA 7 worth? Certainly, in some sets, like 1933 Goudey, a PSA 7 can be worth tons of money, like in the Hugh Critz card. But if a PSA 7 Lockman isn't worth much - than I can't see a huge premium for this card.

Yes - others have found their 8s now, and perhaps there was a perception that, based upon the description, the seller knew what this card could comman in a PSA holder. Perhaps staying on top of the Pop Report for the next few weeks would be worthwhile - but for this many thousands of dollars - I would rather have an 8.5, or some sort of guarantee, etc.

I also know of a PSA 8 that sold privately this month for $2500. (The sale did not involve me). Thus another potential bidder was taken out of the market for that card. It is pretty amazing to have 4 cards graded 8 of that card all sell (and for good $$$) all in the same 30 day period.

    Norty-

    Was the sale a:

    a.) Collector to Collector Sale
    b.) Collector to Dealer Sale
    c.) Dealer to Collector Sale
    d.) Dealer to Dealer Sale

The high bidder probably assumed it would cross to a PSA 7 and bid accordingly... if it's for the set registry why take the chance on spending "8" money if it may not be. Just my 2¢.

    John:

The sale was dealer to collector. The dealer is kicking himself more than a little bit since his sale was the 2nd of the transactions noted above (ie before the $6700 sale and the GAI sale).

Did he know about the 1st sale (the $7100 sale) before he sold the card? Yea...that one has got to hurt.
  • I can only assume the seller tried to cross it to an 8 and was denied by PSA, or that the seller just isn't in touch with the recent prices realized as John showed. I know when I bid on high dollar cards in SGC and GIA holders I always price the card 1 point lower using the SMR.

by looking at all ofhte other cards the seller has listed in his store i would say he has a good idea that this would sell better in a psa holder. his store is also called "Bob's PSA cards" so I think the perception is that hte card was probably a psa 7 that got into a gai holder becasue it could not get into a psa 8 holder. my 2 cents based on the seller as I know nothing about this card besides what I read here

The seller actually listed the $7100 & $6700 prices as a point of reference in his auction, so he was well aware of the price points...jay

earhart47 is psa10fan here and is well aware of everything . i am betting this was a psa 7 2x's over. i am also betting that it was submitted to gai raw?i am also betting he doesn't have 1/4 of the final sale price into the card? if all my bets are correct and i am the seller , i am very happy.

    John:

As I understand it, the buyer asked the seller what he wanted for the card. He quoted the $2500 price. The BUYER said no!!!! 2 days later the buyer came back to him and asked if it were still for sale @$2500. It was mentioned that one was up on E-Bay and stood at somewhere around $2700 (I am not sure of the exact price but it was a couple of days before the auction ended and well before the price skyrocketed to $7100 in the last 20 seconds). The Seller said that he would honor his offer at $2500 and, if the buyer wanted it, it was his for $2500. The buyer finally said yes. About 2 days later, the card hit $7100 and then the other came out shortly thereafter at $6700.

The ironic and disheartening part for the seller is that he submitted his card raw for grading in Chicago. PSA was so backed up that they couldn't do it at the show and took it back to Newport Beach. It took till the end of the next week to finish grading and a few days to ship it back to the dealer. But for the delay, his would have hit E-bay 2 weeks ahead of the one that sold for $7100.

Sounds like a very honorable seller. I understand he may want his privacy, but if not and you'd be willing to share his name I'll certainly add him to my list.

He is a good guy, (though you wouldn't go to him looking for a bargain.....no, not Levi) a reputable seller and he has fantastic high grade material on a regular basis but I feel confident he'd prefer that I keep his name out of it.

I certainly understand. Just too bad the good guys operate in anonymity and we're always hearing about the bad ones.

I passed on this card because I think its chances of crossing over to an 8 are slim, and I have the card in PSA 7 already.
