Holy Cow! Look at all the up arrows on vintage in the new Beckett

We had to all know it was coming, many people are leaving modern behind and looking back to decently clean vintage. Do you think we'll see this trend continue over the next few months, or next few years for that matter? Should be fun to watch. Just curious, do you think they are matching up the raw NRMT values with PSA 7 prices online? Most of the cards that are going up you could get raw described as NRMT for maybe 30-50% of the high Beckett value (although they are usually two grades lower when you receive them).

  • i have seen this rise over the past 4 years . i stopped the new stuff and started on cards from the 1960s and early 70s . most psa 7 and 8.cards like mays 68 and rose and bench 69 in psa 7 have gone up about 20 bucks give or take over that time.the new stuff turned me off when bonds was breaking the hr mark. it just shows that there is to much new stuff waiting to be graded..then prices go down.
  • I don't get the Beckett, I get the SMR. Could you tell me where the majority of "up arrows" are coming from? Or is it a wide range?

    Thanks.

  • A lot of the Mays, Yanks and Dodgers are going up randomly. Most of the up arrows are in the 50's sets with it stretching out and dying down as you get to the 60's and early 70's.

I think it might be Beckett actually taking notice of all the set registry people pursuing high grade versions of this stuff. both graded and ungraded. It might be skewing the prices a little unequally though. But hey, if you own the stuff, good for you! SELL SELL SELL! image

The one good thing about vintage was that the prices almost never changed, a 62T Mantle for example has been like $600 for 10 years. You don't need a new Beckett or SMR every month for that. Modern stuff was the volatile stuff, plus the new pricing each month. Now you guys will have to start paying attention to Beckett/SMR a little more closely, to see how much your collection is appreciating. It's about time that some of this stuff started moving though.. I think it's been a long time coming and was way overdue.
  • A lot of the tobacco issues Beckett rasied their guide on. I still think those issues are as good as gold.

"Why" would the price on a 1950 card rise? The factors that make a card go up in price are:

    scarcity
    condition
    accolades of player
    desire for

Scarcity. Well if there is only "one" of that card fine but if every so often others are "popping" up the value should stay the same or drop.

Condition. Goes hand in hand with scarcity. If it is "Gem Mint 10" it wont (shouldnt) get any worse or better.

Accolades of Player. Well most times he is no longer with us. So there should be no factor here.

Desire for. This is the tough one. "Why" would there be an interest in "William Franks" rookie card? You would have to go to the three above.

So what is the "one" thing that makes the price go up?

Can anyone think of more? Im trying to understand the "business" side of the hobby a little more.
