David: word is that both the 1870-S half dime and the 1873-CC no arrows dime are coming up for auction this summer. Given the choice, which of these unique ultra rarities would you choose and why?

    Hi Bruce,

Both coins are unique, so they are the ultimate in rarity. However, the 1873-CC no arrows dime wins by a large margin in my book for several reasons.

    1. The 73-CC dime has been around a lot longer as the 70-S half dime was discovered in the 1970's. Consequently the 73-CC dime has a lot more noteriety and has had many more years of "publicity" in numismatic circles.

    2. The 73-CC dime has a great pedigree. Not only was it in the Eliasberg collection but it was actually the very last coin Eliasberg purchased to "complete" his set of US coins.

    3. The 73-CC dime is from the Carson City Mint...always a bonus.

    4. Dimes are bigger than half dimes and in general the larger the coin, the larger the demand.

Both coins are fantastic rarities and if I was Bill Gates I'd buy them both.

    Thanks for the great question.

    David
