Trivia Time - What is the Oldest PSA 10

Was looking at the population reports this morning and thought it would be interesting to see what the oldest PSA Gem Mint 10 card(s) were - I had a hunch on the year and issue and appear to be correct. This is out of all PSA graded cards (all sports and non-sports) and thought you guys may want to take a guess. It is possible to guess the right answer (without looking it up - that would be cheating) by knowing which types of cards tend to have more high-grade examples than others. Will post the answer (hopefully the correct one) later today. Note that I am going by the year that an issue is listed in the population report.

Adam - there are numerous 1909 T-206 PSA 10 cards - about a dozen, or perhaps more if memory serves correct. I believe a Japanese gentleman owns most of these - at least that was the story the last time I talked to an owner of one of the common PSA 10 cards from the set....

Can't think of any older ones off the top of my head. Old Judge has an SGC 98 - but I don't think any PSA 10s. There are a number of 10s from many of the card games (National Game, etc.), but I don't think there are any Fan Craze ones - but I'm just going on memory hear (per your request....). I am restricting my analysis to baseball - as there may be many non-sport PSA 10s that I frankly don't care about....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

So is it a sports card or non-sports card? If it is sports it would have to be baseball. I am far from a PSA expert and not really into grading. I know I have seen quite a few 10's from the 50's so it is way before that. I have seen some high grade tobacco cards so there is probably a few 10s in there somewhere. I will go out on a limb with an uneducated guess and say maybe 1915 Cracker Jack.

  • do you mean the oldest PSA 10 as in the card inside the 10 holder that's the oldest?

or as in the first 10 grade given when PSA first started?
  • I thought the oldest was a 1952 Topps Mantle. image

  • I apologize. I thought you meant the first card graded a 10. My choice would either be M116 Sporting Life or T206. image

there might have been a Colgan's Chips 10
  • And the answer is....

    1909 JAMES JEFFRIES PLAYING CARDS

mikeschmidt was on the right track with the National Game cards - the James Jeffries are a boxing set issued in a similar playing card format. T206 may also be considered from the same year but PSA has them listed in the population report under 1911. fsjeter also made a good guess with the M116 and T206. The other issues with at least one PSA 10 through 1911 included the following:

    1910 SWEET CAPORAL PINS (P2)
    1911 T206
    1911 M116 SPORT. LIFE
