8 and 12 Piece Gold Coin Sets Worth Collecting?

Are you better off to focus on collecting more good coins in MS-64 or 65 and better individually or build sets including the tough type 2 dollar? image

I'm not sure what you mean by good?

I would put together the 12 coin type and try to get the best grade possible for each coin. If funds were not a limitation, then I would attempt to acquire a scarce or rare date for each type rather than a common.

For me, funds are a limitation, so the $1 Type 2 and the $3 Gold will be AU.

quality over quantity anytime for me. I've done the series date, m/m thing. I don't enjoy it anymore. Type sets for me now!

I have completed the 12-piece gold set, but I decided to include all seven mints. Makes for an interesting and challenging, and historic set.

Buy what you like and what has value to you in the market. The 7 or 8 pc gold type set is not worth 1 CENT more than the sum of the individual coins. There's no big advantage to either buying a type set or just buying 7 of one type other than spreading risk out. And if that were the case then one should also buy other coins too such as silver dollars, commems, silver type, 20th century dates.

Personally, I see value in the $5 Indian, $3 gold piece, and the $20's. I like the 1 ounce of gold in the $20 Lib/Saint. Even a better date Saint may only cost 4-5x face value. How many other series can one do that in! Whatever floats one's boat.
