anyone done it? were the results comparable? better/lower rate of crossover success w/gai-psa than w/sgc-psa?

I frankly like GAI and would not cross over/crack open their 9.5s to send to PSA. I have however cracked open GAI 9s and submitted to PSA and got 10s. A lot of GAI 9s look gem mint.....I didn't see anything wrong with them and was right on cracking them out.
  • I have a '96 Topps Chrome Antoine Walker Rc that was graded a GAI 9. This was the "First Graded", and it looks like a freakin' BGS 10 in my opinion. It has 50/50 centering, smooth edges, sharp corners, and the surface looks to be just fine. I think it would definitely grade a PSA 10 if I cracked it.

I agree with Eagle Eye on this one. At least this card.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

What is so special about the 1st graded distinction? I have a 7.5 1955 Spahn 1st graded and was just wondering. anyone know?
    Good for you.
  • Nothing in my opinion. Just a ploy to get people attracted to the card more. I bought it off Ebay, and it was shipped this way. They want you to think that there is some signifigance to having the first card that was graded of whatever particular card you send in. Liek a 1/1, right?

    Complete bull.

The "first graded" designation means, it's the first of that particular card getting that grade.
For example; 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. #1 can have "first graded" 9.5, "first graded" 10, "first graded" 9, and so forth. Basically you can have the "first graded" of each grade for that card.

The Beckett baseball magazine finally added GAI to their top 3; making it the Top 4 now and deservingly so. They explain about GAI's first graded, and how it brings a premium.

so with the half point grading system they use you could have 20 "1st graded" for each card then....hmmmmmmm interesting, I would think that from 8 and up that may mean something (not much mind u) so as usual i just missed it (mine is a 7.5) I will say that it is a nice card and one day i will crack it and send it off to psa shhhhhhhh do not tell anyone, especially the grader of death!

lest it come back a 6
    Good for you.

Alright, well because of this thread I had the bright idea of looking from some GAI 9's to see if I could resubmit them and get a similar/better grade. So I got an SP Game Used Gold Carmelo RC, GAI 9. Card books $200 raw, I won it for $65. At that price, if the grade is PSA 8 or BGS 8.5 I can still get my money back, even in that grade, but if it crosses to a 9 or better, I'll turn 25% +. I'll let everyone know what happens. I have a GAI 9.5 86 Donruss the Rookies Bonds, but I feel bad about cracking any 9.5/10 holder. Unless it's one of the "Off brand" grading companies.

The 1st Graded designation is used for the first ten vintage cards graded and the first 25 moderns in that particular grade. I find GAI to be awesome, and from the looks of the line they had at Ft Washington, many others do too. I saw Mr. Mint, Gerry Schwartz, and several big time collectors at their table and there was a huge line.

First 10 and first 25??? What the he11 is the point of that? Not that I understand the point of "1st Graded" in the first place, but the first 10 or 25??? Seems rather pointless to me.

I am soooo excited for the Tri-Star show in KC this weekend. Hope to see some of you there! I would love to get out to a Ft. Washington show sometime too, but the Nat'l is coming up and I might try to take a trip out there, just as a consumer though, not as a vendor. Not that I'd get a table now anyway.

I have better success cracking out GAI's and submitting raw. Crossovers are only making it about half the time. Not that I would crack out a 9.5!

I don't know what you're talking about Davino.
To clarify the matter, this is exactly what "1st Graded" means from the GAI website.

    .

    >>First Graded Program ™
    First Graded Program ™
The Global Authentication First Graded Program™ is designed to inform the Dealer or Collector when they are the first one to submit a card in any grade. Every card starts with a rarity of one. Now you will know if your card is of that rarity. For example, if you are the first person to submit 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle and it is the first card to receive a grade of NM-MT 8, we will designate your card as First Graded.. <<

To further elaborate; the 60 Topps Mantle can have a 1st graded 1, 1st graded 1.5, 1st graded 2...all the way up to a 10. End of discussion.

Alan Rosen, the outspoken critic of card grading for over a decade, is now having his cards graded? ha ha ha

Thanks EagleEye, that makes more sense. I still don't understand why they do one for every grade though. Wouldn't it be more unique to have the first graded regardless of grade? Do any of you collect or actively pursue/use GAI? I only ask because I'm curious if you, or anyone else, actually puts a premium on that designation.

I collect GAI and only pursue the 1st Graded designation (only 9.5 or 10). Haven't bought any on Ebay for awhile because it gets too expensive if I chase down each one of them. Although I've been keeping everything that comes back 1st Graded (only 9.5s or 10s) from my send in. I'm picking up in person 58 cards at this Sunday's show in Van Nuys, CA (submitted 1 month earlier, get it 1 month later...next show).
Save a bundle on shipping, and I submit more when I pick up. Works out great. I've met Steve Rocchi (he's there everytime collecting submissions), and I've talk to Mike Baker a few times when he's there doing the Pre-Grade. I've learned a lot talking to Mike and watching him grade......very valuable information I've pick up on how to decipher each category.

  • As someone who has been an avid PSA supporter for over a decade it pains me to say this but i believe GAI is the wave of the future i prefer their holders the top label is awesome and i am seeing more of their cards on major dealers tables then any company other then PSA. I also have alot more faith in the graders at GAI then i do at PSA i find their grades to be ALOT!!!! more consistent then the mess submitting cards to PSA has become and they have THE MOST KNOWLEDGABLE graders in the business. PSA is still the leader but GAi is gaining momentum at a staggering pace. Also look at the major auction houses Heritage, Mastro, Sportscards plus, and you will see more GAi cards in each of their successive auctions, and the price for many of their cards on ebay is getting stronger all the time. They have made very little splash in the modern market but i honestly believe that is because they are concentrating on vintage because they know that is the future. So yes i still use PSA but MORe and more of my cards are going to GAI where i have received consistent and fair grading. i am not happy with some grades and get a couple i am happy about but not the all or nothing crap shoot that sending cards to psa has become. PS while at ft. washington this last time i noticed a number of former PSA only dealers in line at GAi including Wayne Varner, Peter LAlos, Paul Starx and everyone from the Skerbes to Joe Checkovich, Kurt Coltrane and Brian Drent had a great selection of high dollar GAI cards at their tables with prices identical to their PSA counterparts, when they had a comparable card. i would have to say that GAI is here to stay regardless of the wishes of a few members of this board.image

I just got my cards back yesterday that I had GAI slab for me. I did raw review at the Tri-Star show in KC.

I only let them slab 3 cards. I should've done all of them. They reviewed about 25 cards for me, but I only had them encase 3.

a Reggie Miller RC Mint 9
    Topps Chrome Lebron Perfect 10
    Pristine Common Lebron Perfect 10

I have to admit, I was surprised my chrome didn't come back 1st graded. Still a nice card. I had 2 other 9.5 Topps Chromes but I figured I'd let PSA do them. I have to admit, I'm kinda regretting that decision. I will send those other 20+ cards to PSA though and see how they do. I"ll take a before and after photo. One with the cards in the GAI pregrade holders and one when PSA sends them back. We'll see how the grades differ. I have a bunch of GAI 9's too and a couple of 9.5's for comparison.

I'm waiting on a several-hundred card submission to GAI and a 100 card submission to PSA. I will post comparisons of the two companys cards and let the board judge the accuracy of the respective grades.

I only have one GAI card - but it is overgraded compared to PSA. 1961 Hank Aaron GAI 7.5 o/c both ways 70/30 and two of the corners have too much wear for that high of a graded. If submitted to PSA would probably be a PSA 6.

I wonder if anyone goes on the SGC board and talks about how great PSA grades.

Take a look at this card - I don't know how it didn't get a qualifier! Definitely pushing the envelope.

Mike - Yeah that looks a little too o/c to get an eight.

By the way looks like you are going to hang on and beat me in the Fantasy League this week, unless Steve Finley hits a couple of three runs homers in the last inning. My starting pitching was horrible this week. Who would have thought Tim Hudson would have two bad outings this week.

Go figure! If I keep changing the lineup, one week a guy does great - you put him in the lineup and the guy you took out has a good week!
Hey, that's baseball! I guess or is it 'rounders'?
