1964 BB set sells on ebay

I watched, but bid weakly on the #5 Registry set of 1964 Topps on ebay.

It looked like it wouldn't make the reserve, but it finally sold last night for $15,000.

I estimated SMR for the 7.74 set to be just under $16,000, so it sold for about 94%. The seller called it $17,500, which put the final price at 85% of SMR. It's not the most popular set of the decade, but does have a following. The squared off pictures and block lettering require centered cards to make it look the best. A few upgrades and the winner may have a nice set of 8's and 9's.

That seems like a fair price...for both the buyer and seller.

The cards are not especially hard to pick up (NOTE: if you have $15k to play with) on eBay.

If I had 15k...I think I would find more enjoyment bidding on all the PSA 8s out there rather than blowing my wad on one purchase and still needing to upgrade to PSA 8s

The 64 Aaron is one of my favorite all time cards. I'm still looking for a "9". I think his portrait almost looks 3-D.

For $15K, I would rather buy some individual PSA 8's and 9's instead of an entire set.

I wonder if a set like this is a flip candidate - not in the truest sense of eBay to eBay; I mean, pick up the set, finish it off, and flip it to Mastro. There could be some coin there if you can get Mastro to waive most or all of the seller's premium.

I think it is always encouraging to see complete sets bring almost 100% SMR on E-Bay. No Premium for the buyer, and the seller is in complete control of the transaction. Plus turn-around time is much faster. As the set registry gains momentum, I think more & more complete sets will be viable sellers on E-Bay. Did someone say Mastro-Who?

Tend to agree with current ebay sentiment. I am 90-95% certain my partial set of 1965's will go this late Spring/early Summer (before the National). I had considered taking them to Mastro but my consieglieris have advised staying away and doing it on the boards or on the 'bay. I've got about 40 psa 9's (some pretty low pops), but fear I put it up the wrong week and get slimed. 80-90% of SMR on 8's is OK, but NOT on low pop 9's. image
