required membership costing PSA customers?

I had several cards I felt were worthy of grading several years ago and decided to join PSA. Over the course of the next year, I submitted pretty much all of these cards.

But after my membership expired, I acquired some cards in packs that I also wanted graded. It's only a handful of cards (2 85D Clemens, 96F Kobe, 94SP A-Rod, 87F Bonds, 01UD Pujols). I have no idea if and when I will acquire more "gradeable" cards, so the PSA membership fee did not make sense for me, and I made my first submission to BGS.

You could say my small volume is not worth PSA's time, but multiply that by all the collectors in my situation. But there are also going to be collectors new to grading who only want to send a small portion of cards first before feeling comfortable with sending in more cards ( this is how I started with PSA). They might not want to committ to the membership fee, trying another service, and if they are happy with it, they will stick to it in the future.

Some people "believe" that the larger submitters also get a better shake. Where is the "incentive" to have "Jos Schmo" (great show BTW) come back if he feels his 5 or 10 submits every other month do not appear to grade as well as "Power Submitters" that submit 100 a month.

I never fully understood the membership requirement. But it being PSA (the Leader) I decided to at least test it out. I think I will end up like you.

The yearly fee is not ideal, I agree. But, the free gradings (6, I believe), plus the years SMR printed and online along with pop report access is easily worth the $99. It just seems like they are charging you upfront for services you would probably buy anyway.

At no price, even free, would I submit anything to BGS regardless.

I personally think the membership is complete BS!!!! You do have another option though....find a dealer and submit through them (that's what I do because I would never pay for a membership ever again)

I still don't agree with having to pay for the Pop report if other grading companies give it out for free. The SMR is a guide so yea...pay for that but if the pop report was free it would entice more bidding with newer interest to PSA (those guys who only submit a few cards a year etc)

  • i too started the same way, but back when psa didn't require a membership. lately i have been submitting to SGC (never BGS) just cards that i want encaped for my own collection. i still buy psa, but like WALLST32 stated, i am sure making people become a member to submit is hurting their business. why should i pay a business, to pay for their service? i might still be submitting to psa to this day if it were not for that, but then again there is a lot of other BS that goes on that makes me glad i don't. sgc has a modern special right now for any card 80 to present, no minimum with a 20 day turnaround for $5 a card. outstanding customer service, free pop reports, cheaper shipping, and a far better holder. bash me if you will, this isn't a join the sgc fan club post. just curious why some people bother to pay for the name (like i did). i'll take 2 camrys for 1 lexus any day (same quality, different symbol on the grille).

If you do not like the $99 fee, than submit through a dealer like Vincecarder mentioned. It is fairly easy.
