Just bought my first PSA Card

Ok, don't laugh...but I just bought my first PSA graded card. I put my bid in pretty late, and thankfully no one sniped me. image

My first purchase

I bought another card that is slabbed, but not graded. image

Slabbed by Topps

I'm slowly dipping my toe back in the baseball card hobby, so these entombed cards are a bit strange for me.

How many of you remember the first graded card you bought? I bet I paid less than you !

My first was a 1986 Jerry Rice McDonalds card that I think I paid around $13 shipped for. I have no idea what it is worth, but I figured that was a decent price for an oddball Rice rookie card.

In a few months, you won't be able to recognize a raw card. You have taken your first hit of crack, my friend. You are standing on a land mine beginning the do the Riverdance. Stop now and lead your life. Have family and kids. Smile every once in awhile. Smell the roses. The rest of us have been doomed to hell on earth. Ebay, message boards, submissions, resubmissions, finding slabbed altered cards, finishing sets in PSA 7 and deciding it should really be PSA 8s, turning tricks to fuel your card hobby, entertaining Japanese businessmen by cooking light tempura dinners followed by giving them their nightly bath for a 1959 common. Two out of three people here end up in the local brown bear cage in the zoo smeared with peanut butter. This morning I tried to hang myself with toothpaste. I'm not allowed any solid items that could be fashioned into a noose. I have nightmares about gremlins coming in and cracking out all the graded cards I own. Buy X-Box. Buy a Ferrari. Buy a new identity in Amsterdam and work at the Heineken factory. In the long run, you'll end up to be happier.

I'm not joking especially about the zoo thing.

My first PSA graded card was a 1976 Topps Nolan Ryan in PSA 8 (would it be anyone else?)... it was about 5 years ago and I paid $30! That was my last day of sanity snd my first day of madness!

Welcome to collecting! The moment I started buying PSA graded cards was an awesome experience. It shins a whole new light into the wonderful hobby. The first PSA card I got was a PSA 6 1990 Topps Frank Thomas NNOF. It is still my favorite.

You make me wonder if all true collectors are obsessive compulsive individuals only satisfied by the next "Fix" - that PSA whatever that ephemerally fills the void till requiring the next hit...... Are you a psychiatrist?

My first graded cards were my own submissions...in a lot of about 50, I got an 1987 Fleer Bonds PSA 10, and a few other nice cards. I was hooked from that point, Scumbi called it perfectly.

  • ajw,

Just an FYI, that second auction you won is not a special test issue. Back in 1989 Topps came out with a set of "stand-ups". I don't remember the exact name of the set, but they were mini cards with their 89 issue on one side and the player's rookie on the other. They came in a plastic casing that would stand-up. One of the sides pops off so you can take the card out. I had three of them back in the day. I may still have the McGwire stashed away somewhere.

Yeah, I was just kidding about the second one being "pre-slabbed." I'm pretty sure these were called "Doubleheaders" and I've been looking to add the Clark to my collection for about ten years. I never wanted to pay the price when I saw it at shows. It may have taken me ten years, but I saved at least two bucks! image
