I can NOT believe this Ebay seller!

He seems extraordinarily honest!
I won this St. Thomas & Prince 1939 5 Escudos, mintage only 60,000, advertised as VF. It even had pretty clear scans.
I won it Tuesday for $5.50 (paid by Paypal), a price several dollars below what I was willing to bid, and shipping was $2.50. I figured a normal 2 week delivery with a .37 stamp on it, right?
I received it today (Saturday) by Registered insured mail that cost him $2.69.
Well, I was amazed when I opened up the packet and found this note scribbled on the invoice:
'After reviewing this coin under a magnifier I can see it's in pretty bad shape. So you can have it. Thanks, Bob.'
And then, $8 cash fell out.
I mean, geez!, does anyone see pigs flying outside?? There seems to be hope in the Ebay world after all.
The coin does appear to be in Fine condition with an old cleaning but it's still worth at least what I (didn't) paid for it.
This California guy's auctions go on my watch list for future business and you should check 'em out HERE too.

  • I have dealt with him before and found him to be extremely honest and always says that if you are not happy with the coin, that please return it with no questions asked.

    Wonderful story.

I think that many of the W&AC forum who sell coins are of similar character, having bought from many of them here.

Well, believe it! After reading your post, I browsed the guy's offerings and happened to see a 1948 Timor 10 Avos in Unc. They're hard to come by in that grade and it looked good. Krause lists it for $35, but colonial Timorese prices have risen a good deal since East Timor gained its independence from Indonesia.

I won it last weekend for a good price, but today I got the following note from him:

    << <i>Mark,

I mailed the coin out today.

However, after reviewing it I have to say that I think it's been cleaned sometime in the past. I couldn't see any scratches or such but the toning on it just doesn't look right.

I'm going to send you a refund, via Paypal, for your payment. Go ahead and keep the coin for free. It's a decent collectible piece but I don't like to sell suspicious items unless I describe them as such in my ads.

I bought it long ago so I'm sure I didn't pay that much for it.

You should get the refund later this afternoon. The coin should arrive late this week or early next week.

    Regards,

This was as unnecessary for me as it was for Tbirde, so I really have to appreciate his style!! Definitely a guy worth giving your business to!! image

Well, I can only say that I am looking forward to dealing with him. I am watching some of those Nepalese double mohars that he is currently offering.
