Heartbreaker of a 63 cameo half!

I bought the following coin in a 1963 Proof Set yesterday. The set had very ugly toning, but the cameo Frankie caught my eye. I was not sure what kind of problems the coin would have other than the HUGE milk spot at 8:00 after dipping, but I got the set for a song so it was worth the chance. Once the fugly brown toning was removed a delightful heavy cameo contrast was exposed, but so was the full extent of the milk spot, I guess you can't win them all!

BTW - The coin should grade 66DCAM-67DCAM without the spot. I wonder how many points a huge spot like this will cost?

Not as many as you might think. Hairlines will hurt the grade on a proof much more than a spot.

Oh all the Proof Sets I searched today... I didn't see a single Proof coin with that nice of a contrast... best I saw were a couple with light contrast that would struggle to even make CAM...

It is not that easy, but I love searching the Proof and Special Mint Sets from old collections. I find about 1 of 100 is a keeper. The odds are not as good at a show as most sets have been searched many times for cams.

Yeah... I know... I did find a Proof Set and an SMS set to buy today though... one with a near Cameo Frankie, and a dark blue Jefferson, and another with a near Cameo Jefferson... I need to get another light though, to get better pics of the frost and the contrast... otherwise, I only have 1 light to the side of the coin...

I just sent in a 1961 dime that was DCAM but had a spot. I was going to try using MS70 on it first, but decided it wouldn't do any good, so I sent it in as it was.

I'll let you know the grade this summer when I get the economy submission back
