Sarasota Show Report

This was a small show put on by the Manatee County Coin Club. It was a decent little show, actually saw quite a few Capped bust Half Dimes, which surprised me, because at a show a couple months ago, that was 2 or 3 times larger, I only saw 2 or 3, and I saw at least a dozen or so today! image But, none were in my range, and I didn't have much money anyway. Looked at a couple Mercs, but nothing cheap enough for how much I had... But, I did search the Proof Sets and SMS sets, and picked out 2 image I got a 1961 proof set. The cellophane of the Jefferson was punctured, so it turned a nice darker blue. Pictures below... might be cameo? Not sure, and the color doesn't come through very well on the picture. I think the Frankie might be cameo, if not, it's very close. I need to get another light to show the frost better. Only have one light coming from one side at the moment, so it appears to have weaker frost than it does. The dime also looks partially cameo. I also got a 1966 SMS set. The Jefferson looks to be cameo. It just has some satinyness in the fields... so... I don't know... it could be a cameo one day, and not on another day. Who knows. The rest of the SMS set isn't too exciting... lots of haze on the Kennedy, just like every other SMS set I looked at today... Pictures coming soon... below are the pictures from the Proof Set

Oh, I also met Segoja for the first time. He's a great guy! image Had a lot of very nice peac**k(stinkin' censor...) toned Ikes... and also a nice GSA Morgan image MS64 NGC if I remember right... Picture as soon as I get em small enough to upload imageimage Was great meeting him, and was great seeing Bill Jones again. Always a pleasure to talk with him image

Hey Sego... beware the enviornmental damage! image

I was surprised by the number of dealers, as I expected it to be a smaller show. The parking lot was certainly jammed and there was a fair amount of folks browsing, however, next to zero buying.

Not being in the market for anything, I had the benefit of just browsing around and people watching.

After about an hour, I came to the conclusion that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The same guys were bit*hin' about the same stuff, the same dealers were covering their cases with their lunch and generally being grumpy. One guy yelling at a woman for not picking up the coins by the rims, which I found kind of interesting as she was looking at $10.00 Peace dollars loose in a bin. "Some of those are uncirculated lady!"

Really? As in haven't been touched by human hands in the last two minutes??

I eyesdropped on an interesting conversation a dealer was having with a prospective customer over a coin. It seems some folks just have a flashing sign over their heads that say "Do Not Trust Anything I Say".

    Conversation goes something like this:

"next time you see it, it'll be in a 69 holder."

"That'll' be stretch to ever be holdered 69"

"A guy I know has an in with (I wouldn't dare mention the name of a fellow who's moniker has something to do with hitting a ball a long way - but he did - BY NAME) who told him he would get it in a 69 for him" He continued - "Then it's going into a set that's going to go for a million dollars"

Not sure how some folks sleep at night, but it's a pity the long ball hitter wasn't in Flroida today - I'm sure there would have been quite an exchange.

Saw Sejoja with a case full of gorgeious ikes, but must have missed the Gman, although admittedly, I wasn't quite sure who I was looking for.

All in all, a nice show, and if was a buyer, I would have found a new home for a number of items.
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."

    George/Frank,

    Thanks for the kudo's.

    I'll post the GSA tomorrow.

Pretty wild color and graded NGC MS65 to boot (In the GSA case of course).

This one may even make GSA guy drool, which takes a lot of doing!
