collectors universe price guide???

When will they adjust the prices to truly reflect the prices you have to pay for Morgan dollars. In some cases, greysheet, which is wholesale is very close to or more than collectors universe retail prices. What gives??

They will adjust them to true market values as soon as they adjust all the coins in the price guide to reflect reality.

    Never.

So the collectors universe price guide is totally useless. Tis a shame.

All the non-key date Lincolns are way underpriced, haven't changed price in 2 years, and then the 09-s vdb they keep updating and overpricing. And the absolute most ridiculous thing is the $300 for common date Lincoln Memorials in ms66, some are $20 coins. (I actually saw a dealer at a show trying to sell them for the CU level). Do they realize how much of a disservice they are doing to the hobby with that price guide? If they aren't going to even try to keep it accurate, they should completely get rid of it. PLEASE!

Not totally useless. Is is good for relative value comparison purposes between grades for particular coins and series. The raw pricing data, though, is way off the mark for most coins.

Totally useless. Way off whack for even comparisons. Well at least for Lincolns. Sure Morgan's are similar.

Why do you think their price guide is such a joke, Russ? Certainly, they could put together a price guide that is much more in line with reality. There must be a conscious decision to construct the guide in this way. Why do you think they have done this?

I don't think it's deliberate or, as some like to claim, a conspiracy to help their dealer network. I think they simply do not have the manpower or the motivation to put much work in to it. Combine that with the fact that the market has been accelerating dramatically over the last couple years and it is hard enough to get accurate values for anyone trying to keep track of it.

Personally, as long as submissions are so far behind, I don't care if they ever do anything with the price guide. I want them to focus on turning around coins in a reasonable time. I can do my own value research.

I think they price commonly traded coins like 09-s vdb's so dealers can try to quote the higher prices to sell for more, and on less often traded, tougher to actually locate semi-keys, maybe they leave them low as to try to leave it at a level where dealers can buy them cheaper (and sell them for their true market value since lots of people need these anyway). As for the Lincoln Memorials and other moderns there guide has to be a downright scam!

I think they don't keep up with the prices because they are lazy. What else could it be.

I could see this being the case if the values listed were generally low, and way behind market values. But the opposite seems to be true.

Maybe haletj is right. Greed could be the other posibility..

Come on... it is hardly not "hard enough" to see a common ms66 Lincoln Memorial is not a $300 coin. It would not take much work to go through and change a few numbers to at least respectable numbers, maybe not perfect, but not %1500 percent off.

This price guide is 150% useless. Not even relative values are good for the series I track and make a market in. I've sold 25-30% of the high pop coins in those series, and can't even get homerunhall to listen to my sight unseen buy offers. You'd think If I post a sight unseen and sight seen buy offer well in excess of their retail price, then the price just might go up.

Well it hasn't moved in 2 years. Maybe I'm just out of touch with the ocin market, but I think it's moved just a smidge higher in the last two years.

    just one person's opinion!

You may not have noticed, but there are a few more coins listed in the price guide than common date Lincolns.

As I said, I don't care if they ever update the guide. I want my coins graded in a reasonable time. That is, after all, the business their in. They aren't in the business of publishing a price guide. That's an ancillary activity that does nothing but pull them away from their core business.

And, if they updated the guide, we could be lazy instead of doing a little legwork for ourselves.

No, it's an excellent tool for the scammers on Ebay to profit from when they use it to price their "less than accurate" TPG slabs.

My Gosh! Another thread about the CU Price Guide. What about the Red Book or Coin Values? What about CDN? Are ANY of them accurate? Well, maybe sometimes. BUT, let's face it. There can NEVER be a price "guide" that will reflect prices that 90% of us will agree on. You know why? Because we each have a different perspective on what a particular coin is worth in a particular grade. And the joke of it is we want the price guide to tell us that our perspective is correct. I learned a long time ago that the only market price my coins are worth is the price someone is willing to pay me for my coins. Likewise, if I want to buy a PARTICULAR coin that I like, I will have to pay the price that the owner of the coin demands, not what is in a price guide. Now what I have said, we all probably already know so tell me again what new information you will get from a price guide that will ASSURE you will be able to purchase or sell the particular coin you want or own? JMHO. Steve

    Exactly... so they shouldn't!!!

Edited to add, yeah, the other price guides are nearly as bad too and their main business is to publish a price guide. How could it possibly be just a lack of effort. I'm sure they're all in cahoots about what to do so dealers can make the most money.

I agree. PCGS should focus on what it does best: grading coins and growing the registry. The price guide is not their core competency. They obviously spend very little time and money maintaining it. It has nothing to do with greed, sloth, or any other of the seven sins.

I NEVER look at the PCGS price guide. There are so many other better price guides out there, but, in fact, nothing beats expert experience and your own research. And why should PCGS provide this service for free? Greysheet does not. Neither does Coin World/Coin Values. Neither does Numismedia.

Finally, the only role that the price guide appears to play is as a tool for an unscrupulous seller to fleece an inexperienced buyer. I vote to get rid of it.

I think it is a shame that they do not work harder at keeping it up to date and useful, it could be a very valuable online resource!
