What Caused This on the Obverse?

    I don't know either, but I have seen a lot of 1987's that have that error.

    It's a peculiar, but rather common form of die fatigue (die deterioration) that mainly affects copper-plated zinc cents. It can occur on the obverse, the reverse, or both faces at once. I've seen quite a few examples as severe, or more severe than this.

    If you go through any large pile of zinc cents, you're sure to find a few examples.
