Moldy coins

Coins101Coins101 Posts: 2,602 ✭✭✭
I bought some "unopened" image proof sets off ebay and when I opened them up, one set appears to have some mold or something growing on the coin. The packaging (can't seem to remember what you call the stuff they are sealed in) seems to be still intact. It is on the obverse of a Franklin and the reverse of a quarter. Both are in the same set.

Another set has a coin that has a "toning" spot about twice the size of a pin head on the obverse and a similar spot on the reverse.

What would cause this? I am assuming this is bad. image

Are you sure it's mold & just not ugly toning?

Well, it looks fuzzy, like it is growing. image

If they were kept in a damp environment, they could have mold. Moisture is one of the coin's worst enemies.

No, that is not like it at all. Besides, it is on two silver coins. I will try to get a picture of it sometime in the near future and post it. It is really strange. Kind of like a proof set I received from the mint several years back with a fingerprint on one of the coins. image (I should have sent it back) or the Mint set with two dimes sealed in it.

I would consider a mint set with two dimes sealed in it to be a good thing!

A novel error that would certainly carry at least a small premium! image

I wonder what effect acetone would have?
