Is this the real Pujols #5/500 Bowman Chrome???

Link

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the original #5/500 in a PSA 10 case and sold on ebay for 5-6,000 last year. Does anyone remember this card???

Also, doesn't the numbering on this one look a little fishy. It looks like there may have been another number to the left of the 5 that got erased.....

  • I don't think anyone knows which one is the real McCoy anymore, what with it being sooo easy to doctor the card. The very first one I saw was a PSA 9 o/c a couple of years ago. Then last year, a BGS 9.5 sold for $5100. And just recently, a BGS 8.5 popped up. Now this.

    I inquired about the card:

"Can you please provide a "good" front scan of the card to include the serial number.

    Thanks."

    No one ever replies.......

    Here ya go.
I have no comment on this card since it may lead to questioning PSA which we have found recently with the pulling of two threads on the Haines HOF card, may be deemed unacceptable behavior.

PS: the card checks out with PSA verification

  • THE DESCRIPTION:

<< <i>Up for bid is without a doubt the greatest sports card of the past half century. Not since the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle has there been a rookie card that rivals this one. This is a 2001 Bowman Chrome Autograph rookie card of Albert Pujols. It has been graded PSA 9 - Mint. Serial number is 40002731. However, what makes this card truly special is that it is individually serial numbered 5/500 - his jersey number, making this card a true 1 of 1. Just look at the scan. There were only 500 of these produced in the first place, but not all of those were redeemed, meaning there is far less than 500 in circulation. However, there is only one of these numbered 5/500, which makes this one nearly priceless. PSA 9 Bowman Chrome Autographs of Pujols are going for $1,500+. Beckett indicates that rookie cards corresponding to a player's jersey number go for 3 to 5 times the normal price, making this one worth a minimum of $4,500. Considering that this one is numbered 5/500, making it a 1 of 1, and Albert is the greatest player to come along in probably the last 50 years, this card will continue to climb in value. It will undoubtedly rival the cards of Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and other greats in the future due to its extremely limited print run and the fact that it is the first major autographed rookie of a superstar that is individually serial numbered to his jersey number. >>

All I thought after reading that was: "OPERATORS STANDING BY. FOLKS DONT MISS YOUR CHANCE ON THIS ONE. GET ON THE LINE NOW, WERE TALKING A-L-B-E-R-T - P-U-J-O-L-S T H E S E - A R E - G R E A T INVESTMENTS!!! THIS CARD IS PRISTINE!!!!!!!"

Thanx, I really LIKE that guy - one nite before they took SAH off my cable, I tuned in and he was Gone and replaced by a light weight and eventually a blond - not the same - for those from the east who loved to hate Crazy Eddie commercials - they know what I mean - the first time I saw Don West, I went crazy - he was entertaining - now I have never purchased anything from SAH but for about an hour on a late night show - well, it was funny - then they started bringing Ken (PRO) Goldin on and I lost interest all together.

  • This card should have been a PSA 8 in my opinion. The centering on the front just sucks.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

Do "they" still do those card lots on SAH? B4 whe I collected just casually I didnt think the deals were all that good. Was I correct? Anyway when I first "started" lot buying I was scouring the channels day and night (well whenever I watched TV) looking for those programs and they could not be found.

    Thanks.

Also his jersey number is 5? I look at the card and it says 36. Me confused...... or is his jersey now 5.

Jersey # is 5....this would be his best card as it is a 1/1 in many collectors eyes (vintage collectors may have a problem understanding this). The card is hand numbered and is on a glossy surface so you could rub your finger on the ink and it would rub away. I was interested in purchasing a #5/500 recently and it was a different card than this. There are quite a few of them out there and any Bowman chrome can become #5/500 with handywork. I suggested putting the serial numbers on slips a long time ago (to track the Vince Carter Sp authentic RC #ed 3500) Basically showed that some cards are graded 10-15 times before they get the grade a dealer wants.

Put the serial number on the slip of the graded card and if someone was to crack it out they would have it on record.

then why is he wearing 36 in the
picture right there on the card?

That was a ST camp picture. The rookies always get stuck wearing high numbers, so actually 36 is a little low. But obviously he does wear 5 now.

While I completely agree that altering the seial number is wrong, it doesn't surprise me. Jersey numbers are always popular, Pujols especially so. The Heritage Black Refractor #5/55 sold for $159 the other day, about $100 more than the others I've seen.
