When frost extends into the fields of a proof coin...

Greetings, All -

I've seen examples of proof coins where the frost on the devices extends into the fields. Is this more common for some coins than for others? Does it affect whether or not the coin gets a cameo or deep cameo designation?

  • I assume you are just talking about a small portion of the field, right by the device,
where they didn't completely polish the fields of the die prior to striking. I don't
think this would have any effect on CAM/DCAM attributes as it is mint-made and
shouldn't affect the depth of frost on the devices themselves.

On the other hand, I believe Russ can tell you something about frost being where it
    shouldn't.....Russ?

It depends a great deal on where, how much, and such as to whether it's artificial or mint made. I think this is a per die issue and not a series issue because frost and mirrors are created in die prep. The design can influence the die prep, though. As long as it's not artificial and the fields don't have frost (as opposed to the tiny areas of fields near devices) it should have no impact on CAM/DCAM.
