I was bidding on the Lajoie GAI 2, but am bowing out at $7000. Raw book is $4600, SMR (using % of PSA 5,4 and 3 scale) is ~$5800. With the next increment at $7500 and $1125 for the juice, that's more than a $2500 premium. And it will most probably fetch over $8000, wow.

67Standup - I think the common consensus is that the Lajoie is much harder than was perhaps thought a decade or so ago. Although it is unclear how many of these cards exist - it seems as if the number might be between 100 and 200. There generally do seem to be more high grade examples of this card than contemporary issues - but that is likely attributable to the distribution methodology (e.g. people specifically writing to get one probably took much better care of the card). Additionally - it seems as if Goudey might have produced more Lajoies than they needed - though it is unclear what happened to the others.
Is there a 1934 Goudey sheet that has a different card where the Lajoie is on the 1934 Goudey sheets that have the Lajoie (I think there are three such sheets...?)
I still think that the 1933 Goudey #106 Leo Durocher is a MUCH cooler card - but the Lajoie will continue to be one of the best cards in the hobby - probably #2 in terms of overall popularity (with deference to the Wagner...)

P.S. The one lot I am pursuing in REA is much higher than I wanted to pay - but I have one high bid in now. Let's hope it sticks...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Schmidt: I'm not certain about the sheets. Is there a Goudey website or forum much like the T206 Museum site? The OBC 54 forums are probably the best reference for that answer. I certainly don't live or die by price guides - especially the SMR - but a 40%+ premium to anything is beyond my comfort zone. I'd love to track the price points of the Lajoie. Using the Superior Auction archival link, it doesn't seem like prices have moved much since 1999. Same for the T206 Plank and Magie. I have some cards I really enjoy and consider scarce, but owning a card like the Lajoie would put a popular icon on the collection.

What's the story with the Robert Edward auctions on eBay right now? Why run eBay auctions simultaneously with your off-eBay ones? I don't get it. And a 20% buyers fee? Ouch.
I can't believe the prices either. I thought with Mastro's lots just ending 2 weeks earlier, there would be some deals. Here is a lot that I was winning at $1300 ($1500+ w/ buyers premium & shipping)w/ a day and a half remaining. And to slab this low grade lot of 25 cards, I was even hesitant at that level. It ended up going at double that ...jay Low grade vintage lot
actually in looking back over the closing prices..i think some lots were reasonable.
I'm smiling and happy to pay 1.5 x book for the one regional card I bought. Considering it's the only one I've ever come across.
In hind sight, I regret not taking one more bid on the Kalamazoo Bats Poorman.
The T208 Fireside and/or the '55 Topps stamp panel for 3k seemed expensive, as were a few other rarities like the Boston Garter cards. anybody track the topps sets and other "plain jane" lots ?
Some of the lots final price did seem reasonable. Unfortunately I was spending money at the Canadian Expo and had an early morning 10 K race so I did not get some late bids in.
If anybody won the Tobin Lithograph lot #124 I would be very interested in buying the Mickey Welch card if the cards are going to be sold individually.
murcerfan - No. Probably a good thing you did not go to this show. The same dealers have the good stuff, Len Pottie, Gerry, AJ, 4PlaySportscards, Michel Martel etc. I was not looking for vintage as I did not have a lot of time but nothing caught my eye out of the ordinary. BTW- My friend did sell his Greenberg on ebay a PSA 5 (I think). He has a few more low grade ones at PSA now.
I meant the series '36 opc D hockey...for what it's worth. glad I didn't miss much by staying home and getting some spring cleaning done. besides, it helped justify dropping $$ last night.

There's only one of me. Perhaps you are referring to my multiple personalities.

I just hope your multiple personalities aren't bidding against each other. That could make for an expensive illness!
Or another card that murcer would have beat me out of anyway.
