I hate my ugly brown box Ikes

These coins just get uglier by the day. Their comin' out of the slabs for a shine job. My question is what do they get put in to get rid of that ugly haze without damaging the coin? They are so bad as it is, I can't imagine anything I could do to them to make them look worse.

very cool icon... is that program from the 1964 or 65 season?

  • Coinkat,
Not sure. They were the first pro baseball team I went to see as a kid in the new Astrodome in the mid-sixties. I picked the icon for two reasons. One was the baseball team and the other is my other love of collecting (real Colt .45 pistols).

I am trying to remember the year the team name changed to Astros and I think it may have been 1966 or even as early as 1964... but I could be wrong. I am willing to bet someone will soon post the correct year. I'm sorry this is not helping the Ike Dollar issue that you raised. I think they are best if left in the Govt issued holder... even with the toning that may not always be attractive.

  • I have some ugly silver like that too - maybe someone will post a suggestion.

Regarding the 45's - here's some interesting info:

    More info about Colt 45's/Astros

snip: The Harris County Domed Stadium, otherwise known as the Astrodome, qv opened in early ***1965***, and the team changed its name to the Astros. The stadium occupied 9½ acres and rose 208 feet above the playing surface. The Astros lost the first official game in the Astrodome two to zero to the Philadelphia Phillies.

edited to add: Loanshark - I received the '04 Jeffersons today ...... they were waiting for me when I returned to town today...... had a nice visit down 'Galveston way' with the family.......trying to decide whether to open or not ..... I think I will! image Thanks again, and I appreciate your generosity. I didn't make it to the coin show because the weather was so horrible, that I didn't even travel until it was too late. image

Loanshark may I suggest using MS70 on your brown box Ikes for the hazing. MS70 is not an acid like a dip it is a soapy like cleaner that works well on non copper coins. Just get a bottle of MS70 and with a cotton swab gently pat the MS70 onto the coin, don't rub it in, and let it sit for a minute or two. Then rinse the coin well in water, I mean really well to remove the MS70 then place the coin in acetone, remove and let air dry. This will remove most of that hazing seen so much on brown Ikes.

    You can get MS70 here:

MS70 in a 1 to 5 ratio with distilled water.
    Soak 5-10 secs.
    Rinse WELL.
Quick dip in baking soda/ water solution.
Final bath in distilled water or acetone.

    When you are all done........
I've seen people selling the empty Brown Boxes for around $1 each on eBay.

To get rid of ugly white haze, I use(d) Jeweluster diluted to about 50% with distilled water. Only a very quick dip is needed. Rinse thoroughly then a final rinse with distilled water.

Oh... and if they look like islemangu's, I'll trade you for some nice pre-dipped white ones. image
  • Yes, they do look like that and I really would rather have some blast white ones or at least some nice colors like the coins Jason sells. Is there a reason they won't "rainbow up" or do I just need to keep them longer?

They won't ever get Morgan-like rainbows in the plastic packaging.

The one that islemangu posted is quite nice for gov't packaging... if yours have that nice multicolored concentric toning, don't dip them! Sell them to someone who appreciates them as they are.

Then go down to your local coin store and buy one with some typical hazy white toning (under $10) and dip that instead, or ask the coin shop owner to dip it for you.

You'll make a toned Ike collector somewhere happy, and have enough money left over for a nice dinner. image
