Proof vs MS 1856 Flyers - Goldbergs finally figured it out!

1856. PCGS graded Proof 65. A stunning, well struck example of this classic rare issue. The diagnostic lump on the serif of the N in CENT is present, confirming the proof status.

PCGS and NGC should hire this writer....imageimage

I love Flying Eagle cents! I just wish I could afford them.

What are the diagnostics for differentiating the two?

Did you get your auction catalogue? I have been looking online for the auction but no luck...

It's online but you have to go to the "Bid Now" icon, not the auction highlights. It's tedious to page through but worth it to see the color pics.

MS vs Proof is not that simplistic. It's a method of production, not a die pair. The centering dot on the reverse is not a lump and is not diagnostic of Proof vs MS. Heck, it's not even diagnostic of the die pair, that reverse having been used with other patterns.
