info needed on mint sets in envelopes

I need concrete, verifiable, knowledgable info on whether or not U.S. Mint sets were sealed (the glue strip on the actual envelope moistened and stuck down) at the mint, or shipping contractor for the mint ?
RE: late '50s thru late '60s sets (not proofs, just the unc)

I know this has been a topic of discussion before but i would like to re-open it for personal edification reasons.

Thanks

I can only speak for what I know about and it pertains to an original mint box of 10 sets. I recently opened a box of 1965 SMS sets that came from the mint with 10 sets inside. The individual sets were not sealed. They were in the envelopes and the envelopes were closed but they were never sealed. The box had never been opened so I know the sets inside were in the same shape that they were in when the mint shipped them.

  • I recently bought two original packages of five each 1970 mint sets. In each set the envelope closest to the sealed flaps was sealed. This could have happened due to some himidity entering, or it could have been sealed at the mint. The other four sets in each box was unsealed..........................

I have opened a few mid 50's mint sets that were still sealed in the outer envelope and all of the inner envelopes were NOT sealed but this was from a time when you were limited to only one mint set. mike

Having opened a lot of original Mint Sets I would say that most of the time they were not sealed.

Never found a sealed envelope inside a sealed box. I've opened bunches of sealed mailers and boxes, misc dates in the range you are interested in.

When they do seem to be sealed I would suspect that it has to do with how the sets were stored over the years.

Beware of fake Miint/Proof Set envelopes!image
This day and age, fake envelopes are pretty easy to reproduce!
I have been burned this way when I used to buy late 50's Proof Sets.
    Now, I don't touch ANYTHING in a sealed/"unopened" envelope!
Although, I do agree that humidity (I live in Florida) CAN cause an unsealed envelope to seal.

I don't believe any of the '59-65, '68-'71, or 1986 mint sets were sealed at the
mint. These envelopes will self seal if stored in too humid conditions. I just tossed
out a lot of empty envelopes which had sealed themselves.
