dunno how to set up a poll, but i'm interested in what other collectors think.

do you think that the typical person who calls himself a "coin dealer" , ie. not what you think defines a dealer, but just folks who call themselves dealers, do you think they are:

a. in it just for the money
b. in it mostly for the money, but w/ some peripheral in coins
c. in it mostly because they just love coins, but money plays a big part too, ie. they need to pay the bills
d. in it purely for the coins, & the he11 w/ profits

whaddya think?

    Karl,

You know darn well that the group of people whose profession is rare coin dealer is diverse enough that you can't reasonably pigeonhole them into a single response.

I'd say most around here are coin junkies who gotta pay the mortgage. Ebay's a different story probably more A or B.

i asked about the "typical" dealer. you can call it an "average" dealer if you want, not directed at any 1 person.

I think that somebody who works full time as a dealer HAS to love coins. It is the type of living that is extremely competitive, involves a hell of a lot of work and has thin margins. Without a love of coins, it would be pure drudgery and most would leave to find easier, more lucrative ways to earn a living. Thus, my answer is C.

Note: In the above, I exclude crackout artists shooting for the big kill each time out.

  • All true dealers are in it for the money....

Bad dealers don't care what they buy and sell, as long as they beat the spread and turn a profit...

Good dealers have enough attachment to coins and collectors that they will always deal fairly and honestly with clients in the quest for profits...

Great dealers have such a passion for the trade that they go out of their way to educate and foster collecting...and hopefully draw a loyal customer base which brings them profit...

B - A coin dealer is in business to make money; they could take their capitol and sell cars instead, but chose coins because they like them.

D - As I`m on the lower end of the financial spectrum - less at stake ( money wise ) but nothing I own is earth shattering to speak of either. But, I still like/want/desire quality for what I pay for. Bought a few dogs so far in the 3 or 4 years I`ve been back as well as some goodies. If I do sell, I would like a couple extra bucks more then I bought it for, but I`m in it mainly because some of those circular metal disks look pretty nice too me.image
