On page three there is an interesting story on the loss of coins from circulation
and how this affects mint planning and production. In the story they come up with
some interesting numbers on the coins in circulation. While I wouldn't dispute these
numbers it would appear they use a different definition of what circulation means.
From a collectors standpoint it's interesting to see how many coins are lost or per-
manently removed from the system. This is accomplished by ignoring the newer
coins and looking at the loss for only the older coins. Generally coins that are gone
more than three years aren't coming back but this should prove less true with the
states issues due to the huge hoarding of both uncirculated and circulated coinage.
The Battele Institute did a similar study in 1976 and got similar numbers.

I just got this issue today. Indeed, I've gotten three issues in the last four or five days.
