Greetings darksiders, So what is the going rate for a 1966 Irish mint set and do you think that the bid price is worth it? As far as mint sets I have no idea on how rare a 1966 mint set is so I am in the dark on this one Linky
I haven't heard it called that before but it seems a fitting nickname. I've got a mixed date set myself and the 2"x5" green holder seems fine but you hear that 'sticky' plastic noise when you open it up. Makes me wonder if it contains PVC but there's no visible sign of it on the coins or plastic.
These are more commonly called "airport sets", because they were sold at the Dublin airport from 1958 to 1966 as a way for tourists to take home the coinage of ireland. The coins are usually in fairly decent circulated condition AU55 to MS60. $15 is a reasonable price for what you are getting. -john

These sets and all the coins in them are pretty common. The half crown is over-rated in Krause @ $6. Many of the coins in these will be damaged by corrosion and this one appears to be a very good one. There is some variation in dates.
Brad brought up a valid point- those little green packets are loaded with PVC, unfortunately. Having bought and broken up several sets like that when I was assembling my Irish predecimal collection, I did encounter a few pieces that had to be treated for active PVC (fortunately, none were really awful). It's a pity, since the little green packets are rather cute, but you really must get rid of it and store your coins in something else. Looks like a nice set.
Hey LordM I was going to do that very thing. Most coins I get that come in these type wallets or flips from the seller I remove and place in my own flips. This set looks pretty good and I can only hope there is little or no PVC on the coins.
As John mentioned, they are "aftermarket" sets. I've gotten several sets with mixed-date coins, but I've never gotten an AU55 "slider" like he mentioned.

Yeah I have one of those sets, but I took the coins out of the holder and kept it seperately.....
I bought one of these (all 1966) as a last minute purchase at a coin show for $15.00. On ebay, which I am sure you checked, they are going for $22 to $25 before shipping.
I did not take them out and look em' over until I got home. The side showing (clear side) seemed decent, however, the bronze coins were a little spotty on the side not showing and I am looking to upgrade these.
I was also wondering about the PVC in the "little green packet". I will remove them right away.
I've also usually heard them referred to as the "barnyard set". Unfortunately pretty much anything coming out of Ireland in the 60s & 70s was in PVC holders. I've been collecting the Irish St. Patrick's Day commemorative medals & cachets from the 70s. These were designed by Gabriel Hayes O'Riordan and published by the Franklin Mint. Their holders look nice, but look like they are practically oozing PVC. It would be nice if someone could come up with a "dip" for holders that would seal the PVC in (and without making them stiff and fragile at the same time).
