CICF. Who's goin'?

Just curious about who will be attending CICF. We'll be there the whole time behind our table hopefully selling lots of coins to lots of customers (gotta pay for the exorbitant table fee somehow image). Ben will be giving a presentation on the various imitations of the Venetian ducat Saturday morning, for those who need a sleeping pill, er.... I mean want to attend a fascinating lecture. (Don't tell him I said that... image).

My last and only CICF was in 1997. That show that year was second only to the big San Jose coin show I stumbled into just a few months earlier. I got myself an UNC 1904 shilling from a very well known seller for $49 there - paid for the trip that time.

    Chicago International Coin Fair

It's one of the better shows, at least it was when I went.

  • I'll be there Friday, and probably Friday night for the auction.

  • Think I'll have to pass on this one - air conditioner blew up in the house and all my funds are going to that and the money-pit-on-wheels that I drive.

I will be there on Friday and Saturday walking the floor. On Saturday I will be taking in the lectures and the Chicago Coin Club meeting and I will be attending the lecture on the Venetian Ducat so you can tell him he'll have at least one listener.
  • I'd like to go again today but the parking there is annoying. As for the show yesterday....
The first thought that comes to mind is that there's nothing quite so humbling as being in a room full of coins you know next to nothing about. I saw alot of nice coins, but passed on them due to my lack of knowledge. I bought a total of 4 coins, 3 of which I'll resell. The one I'm keeping is for a Mexican Maximilian type set I'm working on:

I caught very little of the Ponterio auction. The one coin I wanted went for $300 more than I was willing to pay, and after that disappointment I didn't feel like sticking around another couple hours before a few more coins I was interested in came up. There were alot more people at the auction than I figured there would be.

In all, a nice show, even though I found little for myself. I must say that between the $5 entrance fee, and $9 for parking (twice), my wallet feels somewhat violated.

I have to admit I had a better time than usual at the show this year. I was there Friday and Saturday and the turnout seemed to be fairly steady the whole time. There was more material available down in the average collectors pocket book range rather than just the high priced material that was there two and three year ago. (I wasn't able to attend last year.) There were more minors available which was a change from past years and I was even able to find three Conder tokens I needed for my collection and up grade four more significantly! This was the first time in four years I was able to find ANY Conder tokens at the show. I also picked up one VERY nice North Wales farthing token from Civitas. I don't collect the Wales area but I have seen many of them over the years and I have never seen a Wales token that graded better than VF with most of them being VG's and corroded. The piece I got from Civitas is a nice AU with choice surfaces and a faint hint of a blueish tone. It also had a small planchet clip. When I saw it I fell in love with it and had to have it. (There are 22 varieties of Wales farthings with a total mintage of 51,500) And his price was VERY attractive as well.

One thing that is still a turnoff for meis the number of dealer who handle ancients almost exclusively. It amounted to around 65% of the tables or more.

Seeing how enamoured you were with that token, I was considering raising the price by $5.00 instead of lowering it. imageimageimage

In that same vein, the Brits cleaned me out when it comes to nice British coins. I guess I had them priced too cheap. image

Yup. As are all of my other ones too, save for the 1800.

I think I've got a '53 proof set floating around here somewhere.....
