Toning on Silver/Gold vs Copper

Hi David,

My question is in regards to toning.

It appears that any toning on copper issues automatically drops them from the RD designation. No problem so far. When I submit a frankie with toning, there is no Black or Brown designation and it's treated as a non-toned issue. If I submit a electric blue nickel, it won't even be graded. I have a problem with this. If toning on one metal type brings an inferior designation, toning on all metal types should do so. I would not mind my Jeffersons having a BLUE designation or my Franklins having a BROWN designation. Does PCGS plan to bring any consistency to the toning situation in this area?

We are trying to be consistent with the toning issue but it is complex. Clearly, some of the toned raw coins you see making the rounds have been artificially enhanced. We look at each coin and try to decern whether we are seeing the work of Mother Nature or the local coin doctor. It's a tough call but we can only call them as we see them.

    Thanks,

    David
