Language exists only because words are assigned a meaning by those that use the language. In essence, things are what they are because that’s what we say they are. If I say that coin is MS, then darn it, to me the sucker is MS. Now, whether other people chose to conform to my distorted perception of reality is another thing. In the end what matters is that the true meaning of the communication has been received by the reader. Even you understood this meaning and automatically translated it to what you perceive to be the proper standard.

When I'm clearly wrong, my best defense is to retreat into intellectualism and hope that the other person doesnt "go there." I use this with my students often... they dont mess with me b/c they know they cant win.
