Coach's Corner (Be Very Afraid!!!)

imageAfter what I can only call a complete and total waste of money, I felt the need to let the "collecting universe" know about my experience. I recently purchased 2 lots from the March 5, Coach's Corner Sports auctions. If any of you subscribe to SCD than I am sure you are aware of this longtime advertiser in this publication. In fact they were recently awarded a customer service award form SCD (???).

I am currently working on a 1967 Topps registry so I decided to purchased what should have been a lot of "650 Baseball cards including RC's, Star's, Inserts and a 1967 Topps Eddie Mathews." The second lot was "3100 Baseball cards including RC's, Star's, Inserts and a 1967 Topps Ernie Banks." In the first lot of 650, they failed to mention the paper loss on the reverse of the Mathews where it was glued at the four corners. They also conveniently left out the fact that there were 102 1991 Leaf cards (all junk) which contained multiples of Bip Roberts (15), Rick Aguilera (12), Carlos Quintana (12), John Habyan (9), etc.

The second lot of 3100 cards was much the same. The Ernie Banks was trimmed so badly, one corner was rounded to the point of having almost no border at all. Also, there were a couple of hundred football, basketball, and hockey cards which they forgot to mention as well (I must have misunderstood that both lots were supposed to be Baseball cards). One of the cards, a 1991 Score Chet Lemon (more junk) had the face completely cut out of it.

When I contacted Coach’s Corner, I was appalled when they told me they don’t even look at these box lots before putting them in their auctions (not good). Their idea of customer service was putting a $10.00 credit on my auction account which I will not be using ever again (Thanks!)!! That doesn't even cover the shipping for the lots let alone the price. I hope you are all getting the general idea. I won't tell you not to buy anything from Coach's Corner, but be afraid!! BE VERY AFRAID!!!!

In SCD advertisers get the Customer Service Award if they have no complaints lodged against them and they advertise often to meet the criteria.
Perhaps you should contact SCD, since this is where you saw the auction. You may not get much satisfaction, but at least it will be on record your displeasure w/ 1 of its advertisers...jay

Wow, they don't even look at the lots before attaching their name to the items? Hard to believe...but thanks for warning us!

Yep...I would be calling Rocky at SCD...first thing in the morning if I were you.

edited to add: I doubt anything will be done...as their advertisements constitute 43% of the publication nowadays

Why do so many dealers insist on ripping off their customers? I know we all like to grouse about second-tier card grading services, high starting bids, etc., but really-- that kind of stuff has nothing on dealers who don't simply misrepresent, but outright lie, about what they're selling. How much longer does this have to go on for? Are you so hard up that you've got to screw a guy for thirty bucks or so on a lot of VG commons?

  • I can't believe they don't look through the boxes before selling the lots. What if there was a rare card worth more than the price of the lot hiding out in one of them?
  • These boxes looked like something they got from a former small show dealer tired of doing shows, especially the 3100 count box. They've probably dealt with the consignor before and didn't bother to inspect the boxes. I would've thought the same as you, however, that Chet Lemon card makes me believe them when they say they don't check.

  • IS this one of the last few pages of single line listings? If so, then there was no description of the lots.... it becomes a situation when you HAVE to ask specific questions prior or your on your own in bidding on them. I have dealt with them on and off for 15+ years, i've been a bit dissapointed in a few items to say the least, but too have been pleasantly suprised on others. Most are pretty much what is pictured/described/listed in my experience. Sorry to hear that things in your case didn't work out as planned.
  • Agreed, but when they flat out tell you (and I quote) " To be honest, we don't even look at those boxes before listing them," it doesn't seem like it would do any good to enquire. Thanks for the advice but I'm going to cut my past, current, and future losses and just stay away from them. I bought from them on three previous occasions and I have'nt been too impressed yet but this was the straw that broke the Camels back! Even their pictured lots, which I include in my previous purchases, leave alot of room to be desired. I got enough junk of my own, I don't need someone elses too.

BOOPOTTS - Most dealers don't. The few that do get all the press, so it appears that the % is higher...jay

As a non-subscriber or reader to SCD, my lesson out of this is to continue to avoid them. Fair or not, SCD's fault or not, it's just easier to avoid this publication altogether.

    I agree with jrinck.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
