Anyone else trying to complete a Saint Pierre & Miquelon collection?

I've got every Saint Pierre & Miquelon coin issued except for the 1948 Piefort Essai 1 Franc coin. I've been interested in completing this set since about 1980. Anyone finished it?

Here is a picture of the Piefort Essai 2 Francs, total mintage is 104 coins. I can't send any other images because the coins are back in the U.S. in my safe deposit box.

I just thought it an interesting set to try to assemble, especially since Saint Pierre & Miquelon is a French overseas territory located 10 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. So close to Canada and the U.S. and yet very few know of it.

There are only 6 coins total - all minted in 1948. For circulation a 1 Franc (mintage 600,000) & a 2 Francs (mintage 300,000) coin minted in aluminum; an Essais (trial or pattern striking) 1 Franc (mintage 2,000) and 2 Francs (mintage 2,000) struck in Copper-Nickel; and an Pieforts with Essai (trial or pattern striking on a double thick planchet) 1 Franc (mintage 104) and 2 Francs (mintage 104) struck in aluminum.

  • <<Very Nice, Newbie and Shipcoin will probably Know about these, or be tickled to see them>>...Yes you are right , Dan, at least about me image I have the 1 franc coin 1948 KM #1 and looking for the 2 frank coin--hope to catch it soon from local dealers. As far as I know (up to day) these two coins were only two coins struck by that country and only in 1948. I never heard before about any Piedfort Issues of these coins, interesting to hear about it now. A month ago somebody, may be Spoon posted one of these coins in the nice thread of French colonies Aluminum coins and we have discussed them then.

    Yes, I'm in Seoul.
  • Krause lists all 6 coins but I've only ever seen the 2 circulation types. Nice quest! Good luck!

The regular issues of 1948 aren't very difficult to get around here, but that may be
because of the large numbers of ports at the tip of Lake Michigan. Some of the coins
are very difficult to tell from specimen or proof strikes because they are very gemmy.

    Welcome to the forum, USAROK!!

I have the two circulation issues -- bought them from a board member -- but I can't recall seeing the proofs or essai offered, except for a piedfort 1 Fr.

    Askari,

    Thanks for the welcome!

Was the 1 Fr. for sale lately? If so do you remember who was offering it? This is the only coin I'm missing and I would really like to find an example for sale.

No, not recently, I'm afraid. I can't recall who or when, but it was easily 5-6 years ago. It no doubt would have been a good investment, but I've never really been drawn to essais/piedforts.
