Mastronet Prices - Two $100,000 cards + some comparison SGC, GAI, PSA prices

Well there were a few records when it comes to cards.
The PSA 1 T206 Wagner sold for $109,639 which beats the next highest price for a PSA 1 of $92,256 that was in a SportsCardPlus Auction and the SGC 10 which sold for $90,199 in the last Mastro auction.
The PSA 8 Ruth Rookie sold for $109,639 which must be a record.
The PSA 10 Cobb Goudey Sports Kings card sold for a record $81,812.

I was bidding on and watching some SGC, GAI and PSA graded cards that closed for slightly different values:
Bill Russell SGC NMMT 88 rookie - final selling price $2922
Bill Russell PSA NMMT 8 rookie - final selling price $3254
virtually the same - difference might have been in the opening bids

Jimmie Foxx 1941 Playball SGC 9 Mint - final selling price $6559
Jimmie Foxx 1941 Playball PSA 9 Mint - final selling price $7938
fairly big discrepency, the PSA card closed first

Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie GAI Mint 9 - final selling price $8536
Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie PSA Mint 9 - final selling price $7760
the GAI card sold for significantly more - both closed at the same time

Sandy Koufax 1955 Topps Rookie GAI 8 NMMT - final selling price $1321
Sandy Koufax 1955 Topps Rookie PSA 8 NMMT - final selling price $3123
Sandy Koufax 1955 Topps Rookie GAI 8.5 MINT - final selling price $3215
wow! The GAI 8 was very low end, but I am surprised there was no edge for the GAI 8.5

Mickey Mantle 1956 Topps GAI MINT 9 - final selling price $6559
Mickey Mantle 1956 Topps PSA MINT 9 - final selling price $8733
big discrepency which is the opposite of the last auction when I believe the GAI card sold for significantly more

Ted Williams 1949 Leaf SGC 8.5 NMMT - final selling price $5768
Ted Williams 1949 Leaf PSA 8 NMMT - final selling price $5768
no extra value for the half grade
1949 LEAF MINT CARDS

Jackie Robinson 1949 Leaf SGC 9 MINT SMR - $32,500 - final selling price $22399
Babe Ruth 1949 Leaf PSA 9 MINT SMR - $30,000 - final selling price $32816
Ted Williams 1949 Leaf GAI 9 MINT SMR - $25,000 - final selling price $9934
Babe Ruth 1949 Leaf SGC 8 NMMT SMR - $6500 - final selling price $5768
The GAI 9 Williams went awfully low especially in comparison to the 8, and 8.5 above

Good analysis bro, I appreciate it. That Williams is really surprising... I wonder what kept the price down?

    Aro13,

    Good Post !!!

It does seem that while PSA is leading the market in prices realized,GAI is making strides and may overtake SGC as the #2 grading company. I don't have any loyalties, just making an observation.

that's an odd observation..........even for you.

Ted Williams 1949 Leaf SGC 8.5 NMMT - final selling price $5768
Ted Williams 1949 Leaf PSA 8 NMMT - final selling price $5768

Bill Russell SGC NMMT 88 rookie - final selling price $2922
Bill Russell PSA NMMT 8 rookie - final selling price $3254

I'd take that sgc card for $1400 less any day of the year.

    edited to say:
My totally biased viewpoint looks at Aro's much appreciated research and sees some real value in sgc graded cards.

    Murcerfan,

I was not saying that the PSA cards were a better bang for the buck, just that PSA cards were bringing more dollar per card,Wouldn't you say that in both of your examples, the SGC cards were the higher grade and brought less money for their grades than their PSA counterparts ? I would tend to agree with you that SGC cards are a better buy and I frequently try to buy SGC for the purpose of crossovers.

    Vic,
I understand and agree that the $$ being spent on psa holders is remarkable.

    edited for consisteny.
  • I didn't do the reserch aro did, but on Ebay I notice that PSA cards seem to go for more money as well.

So the question being posed is this. If you make more with a card in a PSA holder, do you crossover all your SGC and GAI cards to PSA when you get ready to send them to auction? Why or why not? And, if so, then why did all those people put up there Wagners and Foxx and Bill Russell, etc cards in GAI or SGC?
You spilled WHAT on my 1952 Topps Mantle?!?!?! Doh!!

I think in the interest of full disclosure - most potentially bidding parties on the Wagner SGC 10 in the last Mastro auction were fully aware that the card was formerly in a PSA 1 holder. So - I don't think that should be included in any analysis.... as its value was more relevant to the changing value of Wagner cards in general - and had nothing to do with a PSA v. SGC paradigm....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Good point Marc.
also keep in mind that visual appeal may play a bigger part in relaized price than technical grade for lower grade cards like these Wagners, and on graded pre-war cards in general.

Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie GAI Mint 9 - final selling price $8536
Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie PSA Mint 9 - final selling price $7760
the GAI card sold for significantly more - both closed at the same time

This one is not a highly meaningful difference - both were bid up to the same price ($7760), but then one more bid was placed on one of the cards (the GAI card). This could be because of a collector thinking that the GAI card was slightly nicer, thinking the cards were the same but expecting that the PSA card would be bid beyond what he was willing to pay, preferring GAI, or any one of a multitude of other reasons.

I definately agree with MS on the Wagner. The fact that card was in a PSA holder had little to do with the value. It should be noted that these results were for this auction only and in past Mastro auctions I have noticed that similar GAI and SGC cards have done well in comparison to PSA. For example (these prices are estimates, although I think close), the 49 Bowman Paige sold for over $13,000 in an SGC 9, than $10,000 in a PSA 9 and in this past auction $8000 in GAI 9. So the SGC example outsold the other two.

Interesting info. Thanks for taking the time to compile it.

The Koufax PSA 8 and GAI 8.5 seem very high. A Koufax RC in a GAI 8.5 just sold on ebay for 2K and a PSA 8 went for $2200. Guess this goes to show the ridiculous premium collectors are paying for Mastro endorsed lots. As to the 63 Rose PSA 9, if you recall that was the card that shared a duplicate serial number with the other Rose PSA 9. I would think that would have impacted the final price.

dont believe everything you see and i wonder what percentage of mastro's profits
    are tied up in litigation.

any comments on the final hammer on the campanella sgc 8.5 rookie. I was bidding and got taken out by a high stright bid late on friday. the card looked real nice but I thought the premium was rather high. a psa 8 went for about 1,000 in the last superior auction campanella

That Campy has great color compared to what the card usually looks like. It is extremely presentable. My guess, however, is that someone with a gambling streak and a possible $1K to burn is planning on cracking it out and submitting it to PSA in the hope of garnering a 9.
