1987 Fleer Bonds

This is a nice card and hard to find mint because of the chipping. It may be argued that it has been overprinted, but the chipping makes up for it. I see that it sells for above $85 now and it use to be below $50 for a long time. Although this is an 80's card, it never reached its current value and popularity till the very late 90's, but mostly the new millenium. Could his card be a bargain now? It could just as well be $250 once his name is mentioned along side Ruth.

I am not so much into Bonds, his personality is a big turn off, but he is one remarkable player. I think he will break the all-time home run record. I know many people are not really happy about that for some reason. Many don't want him to pass Ruth, let alone, Hank. Strange to feel that way, but the feeling is true. People didn't mind Rickey breaking the all-time stolen base record, but they minded when he opened his mouth saying he was the greatest player....

My attention was drawn to Bonds when he was near breaking Mattingly's all-time MLB record of most home runs (9) in 7 consecutive homer games. Breaking this record would have meant Mattingly would be off the record books. It would be kind of sad, because here was a man who everyone can attest to being sports enhancing drug free and established a record that not even so-called home run hitters could match given the juiced ball era. Then a child could not point to the stat and ask "who was he?" and give me an opportunity to say what a special athlete Mattingly was and his accomplishments were only exceeded by the grace and humbleness of his character. (I would want my kid to be more like Mattingly than like Bonds)

I remember the same issue was brought up with Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig's record. Many in the sports world say that the record should stand because Gehrig's streak did not end because he got hurt on the field and landed on the DL, the streak ended because he was dying. He most likely played the last few years with his condition known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis already having taken much effect, causing his body to degenerate, bones turning into dust and crushing in on themselves.....He was a true iron man and many people felt that his record could by no means be duplicated ....no one is going to play when they are dying.....Ripken was a healthy man when he matched the streak...how would he fare with such a degenerative ailement? I know Ripken owns the record fair and square, but I just wanted to really analyze the situation and illuminate a different view since breaking a record has so many ramifications we all don't always think about.

  • 87 Fleer along with the 86 issue are both great looking and pretty much ignored by the hobby. 87 has chipping issues, nothing compared to the tough 86 dark blue borders......

heck it was up to 150 when he broke mcgwires record...i think its LOW right now...but there is way too much supply to ever meet demand...let us HOPE for those who own this card in high grade that he DOES break all the records...cause if not...it will go even lower...aka jr!!

  • What has beckett got the '87 Fleer Bonds listed at now? On ebay raw "mint" cards are going for at least $80 and as much as a hundred depending on the the feedback of the seller. And this is a raw card! Last time I looked at a beckett I think it was $60 which is severely below the actual current market price.

Try finding an 87 Donruss PSA 9. That is also a tough card.

    Deutschergeist,

Good points on Gehrig and Ripken.
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Is the 1987 Fleer now deemed the official RC?

I always thought the 1986 Topps Traded and 1986 Fleer Update and various tiffany cards were nice cards.
  • I've never understood this at all.
The 1986 Fleer Update Bonds is a better looking card, has a lower production (so it is rarer), and is as hard or harder to get in the higher condition, but the hobby recognizes the 1987 Fleer as his rookie and it is worth more.
Go back a few years before '87 and all the hype was on the 1984 Fleer Update Dwight Gooden rookie, not the 1985 Fleer Gooden. The '84 Fleer Update was considered his official XRC and fetched a much higher price because of it's rarity compared to the regular '85 Gooden (just like the 1986 XRC/1987 RC Fleer Bonds cards).
At one point the Gooden '84 Fleer XRC was around $250-$300 (believe it or not) and the regular '85 Fleer Gooden was about $15.
I truly think one day everyone will realize the rarity and beauty of the '86 Fleer Update Bonds and it will soar past the '87 Fleer in a matter of weeks.
    You heard it here first.

Even WHEN this happens (all the record breaking) the demand will not meet the supply. All cards in the 80's were mass produced big time (try to get the card companies to give you figures on production. They won't.).
You know how you defeat this problem? Only buy and sell the upper end professionally graded Bonds rookies.
9's or 10's. Nothing else, unless you have the only 8 of a Bonds card.
Quality versus quantity. Quality is all that matters to people now. Quality and peace of mind.

How will the hobby view his recent refusal at a time when he needs to embrace the hobby instead of turning its back on it and not signing with the PA????....he is left out of all of our heritage sets now .... no set will represent the top player doing the bigget feat in baseball.....unblieveable

  • Are you really suprised? Think of the player you are talking about. When has Bonds ever cared about anyone, or anything, more than himself?
  • This is why people dislike him so much.

We like our star players and record breakers to be nice, humble, role moldels.

Instead we get an arrogant, steroid popping whiner who get 3 lockers to himself and a big screen TV in the locker room, and doesn't have to work out or travel with his "team."

One guy who stood up to him and called him out on all this bullsh$t was Jeff Kent. He is no longer on the team now.

I was not suprised at all when I saw the news of this action by Bonds with the baseball cards.

In my humble opinion, if he hits .400 each of the next five years, ends up with 1100 home runs, and he gets 3 triple crowns - the card will NEVER go above $150 - due to the fact they were printed in the same quantity as toilet paper.

I disagree. If he gets past 730, and it looks like he'll break Aaron's record, this card is just going to take off. If blew through the ceiling two years ago when he broke Mac's record, and that record had stood for only 5 years (or so). If he takes the all time HR record, watch out.

Along the same lines, I'd keep an eye out on the '90 Leaf Sosa and the '95 Bow Best Andruw Jones. Sosa has a chance to break the record if the steroids don't break him, and Jones is only 27 yrs old with 225 career HR's already. Given that his best power years are coming, it's not hard to picture Jones hitting another 400-500 in his career, in which case his moderately priced BB RC is going to go gonzo. You heard it here first-- watch what happens to the Jones RC sometime around 2010. Everyone's going to realize he's only 33, and he's already going to have 450 or so mashes. That card can only go up.
