Centering school

I just pulled this out of an unopened '86 traded set. IMO the corners are perfect, but I measure the centering to be 62.5/37.5 top to bottom. Side to side looks good, gloss and edges look good. With this centering, could it 9?

Edited to add: card edges and face look much nicer than the scan; those marks on the left aren't on the card and the edges are not nearly as rough as they look - I have four 8's and this one is much nicer than any of those.

In my opinion, yes, it could pull a nine.

  • definitely a 9 if those aren't chips on the top and top left edges where it's black

In my opinion, that looks like an 8. L to R centering looks off quite a bit (look at the thin border on the left versus the wider right side). Also, when you add in the top to bottom centering being off as well, if those are chips along the top border, this might not even get an 8.

  • whoops, double post
  • There are nine's on e-bay right now that don't have centering as good as yours.

y'all have driven me back to the loupe, and there are 4 chips - two above the "AT" in PIRATES, the other two to the left of the "P". I guess my gem ain't so gem....image

Hey Soxfan, do you really think the left to right centering is off "quite a bit"? It looks pretty damn good to me. I'd guess 52/48 if that. Just curious. Anyway, my overall grade would definitely be a 8. Even with the chips.

List it on Ebay raw, and let someone bid it up that may think they could get a 9 out of it. That always works.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

Roach, I definitely do not like the L/R centering on this card. Look again at the narrow left border, and the wider right one...maybe saying "quite a bit" was too strong, but I don't see this as 52/48. Certainly less than that. At least we agree on the 8 (maybe), though...

Those top chips are going to knock it down as well.

Heres a "trick". Put your mouse cursor over Barry. Right click and hold down and slightly move the mouse. You SHOULD get the "ghostbusters/do not enter symbol". It is round and while holding the mouse button down you can get a better idea of the different width areas around the card by moving the cursor around the card.

I have seen 9's with slight chipping. I rarely see any 9's that are perfect for this type of card. Show me a 9, and I will show you some chipping. I guess I am too picky. This card looks like all the other 9's I have seen, chips and all.

Here is a 9 that I sold recently. It was graded in March.

    Bonds PSA 9

Can send you the scan if it would help.

"if those are chips along the top border, this might not even get an 8.."

I've seen 10's of this card that have much worse chipping than this example.

Let unklbnz or dslsports submit this card and you will get a Gem Mint grade....I would bet you would get an 8 on this card even though I've seen PSA 9's with worse chipping and centering that this one. Best thing to do is submit it with 5-10 of the same card and you'll pull the 9....

Sad but true. I agree with VC. I have seen 9's and 10's with worse chipping...wonder where they came from?

I have heard that a "linen loupe", 10X can be found at a fabric store like Joanne's Fabric (think this is a chain).
There are some science supply companies that sell them but the fabric store has them for less.
They come with a removable scale that is good for measuring centering.
Just found this out recently so haven't bought one yet.

Here are a few online sources. Link 3, Jakes supplies has a handheld microscope for like 30$ that is 200x I believe - along with a loupe, I think I am going to try it. I will test it out. If I really like it, I will come back and give a report.

edit: PS, I was over at Hobby Lobby tonite - big company - no loupes - was surprised.

Bestprice bestprice bestprice: local War Surplus Store, if you have one in your town - right next to the knives and compasses! I paid $12 for mine, and the linen loupe would have been a buck more.

Nice links, Mike. I actually just use a cheap $5 handheld loupe, but I am curious if a "linen loupe" would be any more helpful. Curious to hear your report...

  • Check the yellow pages for the nearest jewelry supply store or ask a jeweler. And by the way, I just got a 1975 Topps #629 Joe Hoerner graded PSA 9 with a green pen mark next to his left arm (check the scan on my registry-F. Scott's 1975 Topps Set). I wonder how that one slipped through?
