Question for Hockey Card Collectors.....

I have in the last year got back into collection Hockey Cards, primarely from the years of 62-76 and only high grade stuff....

What I am wondering and I need some of veteran insight here, is that do you find that regardless of what you are looking for, that it always comes around again and again........what I mean too say is that I am the type that when I see a card on sale whether at Ebay or some collector's site, I feel compelled to purchase that card right away because I am always thinking that I will never see that card again??!!!!

Can a person just relax knowing that eventually somewhere somehow, cards are always going to be popping up ove and over again and you do not necessarily have to pounce on the card the first time you see it???

I figure mayby some of you Vets out there can tell me that one way another, cards will always be available........

I hope I am making sense here my fellow card collectors........I'm not sure if I articulated myself well here???

Your insight is appreciated from this Albertan in Calgary!!

Thanks

  • are you Devonshanehill on ebay? if so, congrats on the 71 OPC PSA 9 checklist.

whenever i see a card that i need, i'll usually win it. with hockey, it seems that high grade vintage rarely comes up for sale. i mainly collect OPC rookies and vintage stars, and the availability of these cards is a huge issue. if one comes up on ebay that i pass on, it could be months or even years before another one comes along.

its a double edged sword though. for a period of about 6 months, not one 1980 Messier PSA 9 rookie came up on ebay. i finally purchased one for $450, figuring i might not see it again for awhile. sure enough, a few Messiers showed up for sale right after, both going for under $300. the distribution for high grade hockey is very inconsistent, to say the least.
  • Now I must say that the world is a far nicer place when you see a guy from Calgary and one sporting a Red Wings logo conversing in a friendly manner during the middle of the Flames/Wings series-- a series the Detroit team had better take seriously or they'll be the kings of disappointment again!

Actually, it's uncertain whether the Albertan is yet aware that Hockey Town (a moniker more appropriate to about a half dozen burghs on the Iron Range in Minnesota) has responded. Hopefully, there will be no deuce for unsportsmanlike conduct. image

  • great question and one I wonder about myself many times on ebay, i just tell myself that if i wait long enough they'll all come back around...then i never see them againimage

I'm more the patient, cheap type, so I always go on the assumption that a card will come up again. image

I wish you would of bid on my recent hockey auctions.
  • Yeah Good Riddance, I was the one that purchased that Checklist ........and that is a good example of what I am talking
about..........I waited about a year before seeing a PSA 8 and then the PSA 9 which I bought.......and I know that card
    is rare........especially in top condition........

So if I am discerning correctly from you chaps, some of the good stuff takes a long time to come around then.....mmmmmm....
I am on a budget here so its not like I got money to burn ............ but I am not very disciplined either.........when I see something that I know is just a great deal and a card that I love, I go ahead and get it.........I really need to learn to govern
    my impulses...

Also, let it be known though I am from Calgary and good riddance is a Red Wing fan, I am a die hard Flyers fan and I am
hoping for revenge against the Red Wings from that fiasco in 97......har har......... can't say I am a Flames fan at all but they
sure are showing a lot of spunk this year.......really surprising.........I hardly know even many of the teams players aside from the goalie and Iglina...........

    Thanks from Devon in Cowtown
  • In addition, in my short time this past year on Ebay, I have seen many copies of high grade (PSA 8 or better) over and over
again this year.........even some cards from the 50's so I am hopeful that even though I cannot get them all now, there
will always be someong selling something out there I need..........I figured personally from all the sets I am working on from
62 to 77, that that Checklist 111 OPC in high grade was about the rarest card to find..........though I sure don't see a lot
of the Bobby Orr Cards from the 60's to often....especially from the 68/69 OPC set........

    Thanks

AlbertanDude - I really think it depends on what you are looking for. Buying the 71 OPC #111 checklist was a wise move. I seldom see any raw #111's that would even grade EXMT and there are plenty of collectors looking for that card unchecked in raw form. For the Parkhurst sets from the early 60's I am seeing more and more of these cards in high grade. It used to be that you could never find a card #42 of Alex Faulkner from the 63 Parkhurst set and everybody was looking for one, now I have seen more than a few in PSA 8 on ebay in the last year. The 68-69 set is tough to get in high grade and well centered. Ask Yawie99. I believe he gave up putting a graded set together because he just could not find enough cards that he liked. So for that year you might want to bid high. Topps from the mid-60's also seems to be obtainable in PSA 8 so you might want to be patient there. I would definately advise being patient with the OPC cards from the early 70's. At the Canadian Expo in Toronto there is an abundance of these cards raw in NM or better condition and often for half book.
Are there not quite a few good card stores in Calgary? I was in Banff recently and flew out of the Calgary airport and on the drive to Banff I saw quite a few stores.
  • Aro I really appreciate that insight.......

To be honest, the one store that was well known here has closed ........... that was where I used to
go but his old stuff wasn't anything great........there is another of couple of stores here in Calgary
but run by a very very questionable character for those who are in the know.........I have gotten ripped
off by this chap before......I suppose card shows are always an option.........but lets face it...TO and the
surrounding area are a Hockey collectors Mecca so to speak.........

Yeah I have to agree.......I am seeing lots of nice stuff from the early to mid 60's on Ebay and elsewhere...
the 68/69 set is tough........you sure are right about that.........I have about a fifth of it done ... mainly in
Raw ........really nice sharp stuff but as you point out, not at times well centered........

I really feel I need to relax and take my time..........besides, my credit cards are taking a beating here....

    Thanks for the help....
