A little break from the work day... can you hit a 90mph fastball?

Sorry if you guys feel this is inappropriate for this board (it's the only one I check anyways and again, most of the people I know are on this board).

This program tests to see if you have the reaction time to hit a 90 mph pitch.

I still play baseball in a league. I actually hit a home run last year (over a 10 ft high wall about 325 ft away). I wouldn't say it was 90 mph though.. probably more like 80-85, but still, the feeling is still one of the most awesome feelings in life... along with probably making a hole in one.

Reaction time

You might need to install Shockwave (it'll prompt you).

My best time so far is .1490 sec.

    Timing is everything I guess...

    My best was: .1440 sec
  • was a little slow on my first try .1880, but improved on my second try: 0.0020 seconds!
See if anyone can beat that!
  • I don't know about a computer simulation but I play in the Houston MSBL's over-35 division. Most of the pitchers are around a real good high school or maybe junior college level -- they top out around 80 mph. But one time back in 1989, I got to take some batting practice against J.R. Richard just for fun. Now, I'm not the greatest hitter in the league but I'm not bad. J.R. was certainly past his prime but the guy is 6' 9" and probably about 300 lbs. He was telling us what pitch he was going to throw -- fastball, curveball or slider. Out of 15 pitches I fouled one off and swished on the other 14. The fastballs were probably in the 90 mph range (he threw close to 100 mph in his prime) and the curves buckled my knees even though I knew they were coming! Gives one a great appreciation for the level of skill at the MLB level.

  • by the way, the result of 0.0020 seconds is not that accurate.
It tells me than I hit a home run, but really that ball should have been pulled foul.

I used to be able to hit a 90mph fastball from a pitching machine. I'm not just talking about making contact, but drilling the ball. Nobody I ever faced could throw that hard, though, so I couldn't test myself in a real world situation where curves, sliders, off-speed, and garbage pitches would be mixed in.
  • This is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

Bring back the penguin batting game.

  • This is sorta misleading cause in real life you see the pitcher wind up. Here there is no wind up.

I have never faced live pitching this fast, but I have hit 90 to 95 on a pitching machine that WAS NOT consistent. I actually had to take pitches that were low, high, inside, and outside. There was a 25 ft high fence that was 325 away and I cleared it several times. That has been a couple of years ago. The business has closed now, unfortunately.

By the way, .1110 and .1120.

  • The fastest I have hit was Ben McDonald at 96-97 mph in about 35 degree weather followed by Alex Fernandez at around 92-93. A lot of times it is not so much the speed but the movement and how well they conceal the ball. As hard as McDonald was throwing it was not difficult to track, but I did face a guy that was a first rounder for the Dodgers and the pitches sounded fast. Luckily I walked because that was only the second time in my life where I knew that I was not hitting off of that guy.

    I just pulled a .0850,

.0020 is impossible by the way.

I think the intent here is to actually wait until you see the "Swing Batter!" screen before attempting to click. Jumping the gun is really guessing, and doesn't tell you anything. I'm sure we could all get 0.02 if we randomly clicked long enough.

Just like a pitching machine that throws 90mph. You can sit there and randomly swing and maybe 1 out of 1000 times you'll get a decent hit, but what does that tell you? In reality you wait for the pitch, react, then swing with some meaningful purpose. Your odds of getting a legitimate hit are much higher assuming that you even have the adequate reaction time to begin with.

It sounds like the lowest legitimate score posted so far is 0.111 (Basilone, is you're 0.085 legit?). Pretty darn good!

I have great reflexes, which is what this thing measures. But when it comes to standing in the batter's box....I might as well be standing there with a toothpick in my hands, along with the rest of you video game dudes.

Don't sell yourself short. There is something to be said about quick reaction times. If you don't have quick reactions, you don't have a chance at success in a sport like baseball, no matter how strong you are or how fast you can run.

But rare is it that anyone is exceptional in all three categories.

Totally legit. I tried for like 5 minutes to get it. My stellar reflexes are from qucikly clicking back to Excel from the CU Message boards while at work !!

  • I went 3 for 5 with two Home Runs! Yankees here I come!!

Of course if this were live pitching I'd be lucky to get a bunt foul out.
  • I hit 90mph fastballs, and even good curves pretty easily.....in 1981!

My best on that game was .1030 but my average was around .18. I have a problem hitting fast balls. If the pitches are in the 60-70mph range, I do really well. I'm a decent size guy (about 6'1" 260lbs.), so it's not hard for me to put it over major league fences when I can make contact. When I got to high school, I started having a real problem with baseball because some of the pitchers were throwing in the high 80's and I could barely hit them.
  • That's why they say hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. Although the way I hit a stationary golf ball comes in a close second.

  • Like I said, I tried twice.
the second time I got 0.0020
yeah so I anticipated the pitch (thought I would get a fastball and I did).....fact is I only tried twice!

In anyone can tell me how to post a the results from shockwave her I will be glad to do so.
