Anybody hearing this about the Tillman story?
I received it in an e mail.

His friends are suggesting that since he wore #40 for the Cardinals, that the NFL permanently make one of the 40 yard lines on all football fields in America red, white and blue in his honor.

That way when future generations ask why the 40 yard line is red, white and blue, they'll know the story of Pat Tillman.

They recommend calling the NFL to offer your support for this suggestion (212) 450-2000.Text

I had not seen that. That is very sad.

They made a huge to-do about his leaving the NFL to go fight, I believe his brother is fighting over there as well. He certainly was a courageous and honorable young man, as are all the men and women fighting over there.

Let's hope they all make it home safely.
  • A true HERO. No doubt about it. This is why a guy like that should be a role model, not because of the NFL.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?
  • Like alot of you I was very impressed with Tillman when I learned about his decision to leave football and go serve his country.

I was even more so impressed to learn he and his brother wanted to join the special forces community in wanting to become Rangers. One of the most elite light infantry units in the world. They both could have joined the military and taken easier paths, but to become a Ranger you are choosing to put your self through alot of tedious training, to be held to higher standards and increase your chances of actually being put into harms way.

Upon becoming a Ranger you choose to live your life by something called the Ranger Creed which I will share with those who do not know it.

    RANGER CREED

Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession. I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high "esprit de corps' of my Ranger Regiment.

Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrices at the cutting agde of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to muve futher, faster and fight harder than any other soldier.

Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be. One hundred percent and then some.

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specialy selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, my neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.

Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrase my country.

Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission, though I be the lone survivor..

    RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!

Each and every person who makes it to become a Ranger learns this creed and lives their life by it. I have the very most respect for Tillman and my heart felt sympathies go out to his family, as it does to all familes and friends of people who fall on the field of battle to protect those who need protecting.

    Tillman on eBay >>

In situations like this, Ebay should put a 7 day moratorium on items relating to the person. This is just sick.
  • This guy was a class act all the way. In between the summer of my sophomore and junior year in high school at Wilcox in Santa Clara, we entered the Leland High School passing league tournament. Tillman had graduated from Leland a year before and was the CCS player of the year (unbeleivable running back, starred on defense also), which got him his ride to Arizona State. The passing tournament is in the middle of the summer, and that weekend it was in the 100-103 degree range, any shady spots were at a premium. In our bracket Pat Tillman was one of the referees, I think he reffed two of our games.

So everyone notices that he made these huge national headlines by leaving the NFL, and now even more so by this terrible news, but I just wanted to point out that long before this, when he was 19 years old he had a heart of gold that will probably go unnoticed. While most star athletes who get full rides to major colleges are arrogant and think they're the greatest thing on earth, this guy volunteered his time for his high school in 100 plus degree weather. Now that is a great person through and through.

I've long lamented that we give our time, money, and adoration to people who play games, and who, most of the time, want nothing to do with us on a personal level, while the real people who we should look up to are saving lives and dying for our country, and who wouldn't think twice to give us the time of day if we encountered them on the street.

If I had the money and time, I'd put together a card set featuring every American soldier who has died in service of our country. Reading the story of, say, Pat Tillman, on a card, would mean much more to me than reading about how many home runs some arrogant, steroid filled jerk hit last year.

AdamLee, thanks for adding that Ranger Creed in. It shows that something other than $9 million dollars can motivate and inspire a man to greatness, which is no doubt how his sacrifice will be remembered.

Also, Jrinck makes a good point...how about Ebay stepping in and protecting his legacy from the profit-hungry scum, at least for a little while. That would be a classy move.
