Question for 1956 collectors

Can anyone tell me why the Ted Williams card has that annoying line on the right top above the box with his name in it? I dont think I have seen one without it, it sometimes has a yellow or green line.

    It was a mistake in "paste up" whan the art was put together for the card, the type box was positioned in the wrong spot... I guess you could call it an uncorrected error? I know it takes away from the look of the card, but they all have it unfortunately.

    BTW... welcome aboard!

    The line color differences are considered by some, to be variations or rareities of the 56 set.

    This type of "variation" can also be found on cards #ed 184, 187, and 240 Whitey Ford.

    There is another current post regarding a possible new variation on a team card and some missing print. It seem besides the obvious back white / gray differences, this classic set is still evolving with additional subtle variations.

    A complete all inclusive set with all back color differences, line color changes, team cards variations, checklists, and anything else of a variable nature, would be a monster size set of around 700 cards.

    Hi lothar, I have just started working on this set, it is my favorite , I am attacking this task by attempting to get the hof and brooklyn team players first. This will be a long term effort to say the least ($$$). My biggest problem is that I love all the 53-54 cards as well and have to grab a few here and there, you being just two checklists away is great..congrats. This set is beatifull and I find out it also has a few variations such as the Williams card with the different colored lines and gray/white backs. I only buy the gray, but have heard certain team cards only come in the white back..is this true? If so which ones.
  • Lothar & all,

    My complete set is currently at 7.78 GPA but I will be shooting for 8.00 or better over time. I have about a dozen 8's in the pipeline that will get me over 7.80. Most of my new purchases are through dealers, not through eBay. One advantage using dealers is that I can usually trade in my unneeded PSA 7 for trade credit against the new PSA 8.

    The interest in this set is evidenced by the fact that there are 15 100% complete sets currently registered with another 3 only a few cards away. Of the 15 complete sets, 8 have a GPA of 8.00 or better, and mine ranks only #11.

    I'm also shooting for a 8.00 GPA and better for my 1957 set over time.

    Lothar;

    I am not new to the set, but I have 40 cards all in PSA 8... I intend to put more effort into this set over the summer. It has been one of my favorites since I was akid in the 70s... and the person who wrote that it is a collector's set hit it right on the head! No tough high number series, no outrageous $10000 rookies, just a nice design with loads of Hall of Famers! I love it! And I can actually afford to build it in straight 8! I cannot do that with any other Topps set from the 50s (either too much money or the set is too big).

    I think every vintage collector should have the 56 Topps set on their list and in order to pass "Vintage Set Collecting 101" you need to build this set!

    Threw in the towel on an attempt to build a 7.5+ set about a year or so ago, though I was only about 15 percent into it. Still hope to build it one day, as it's one of my all time favorites. Speaking of the Williams, I can vividly recall sending my mom into a fit of apoplexy when I wanted to spend a whopping $80 on a high-grade one about 15 or 16 years ago. I relented and later traded for my cousin's '56 Williams, which looked like it had been used to take dental impressions. It came back a PSA 4 many years later and is long gone from my collection. Kinda wish I still had it just for old time's sake.
