1933/34 Goudey vs. Canadian Goudey

Although the 1933 and 1934 World Wide Gum - aka Canadian Goudeys - were printed in shorter supply than the "American" Goudey, do you think they command a higher price? My bid for a 1934 World Wide Gum Ruth PSA 5 was topped at $1800, I didn't think it would fetch this much; book is $1400, SMR at $1950. Anybody know more about these issues?

  • I think I can answer this one. I collect 1933 and 34 World Wide Gum, and the cards sell for less (sometimes half as much) than their American counterparts, EXCEPT when it comes to some of the more popular players: Ruth, Gehrig, Berg, etc., whom player collectors are willing to pay full book for. Ruth especially.
  • There is a partial set in Lew Lipset's auction that ends tonight.

Do you consider the '34 World Wide Gum tougher than the '33 series? Was the production similar to 1965-1976 OPC/Topps, i.e., about 5-10%?

How often do you see complete sets for sale? Thanks.

  • The Population report shows about half as many 34 cards as 33, and that matches up with my experience - 34s seem to be roughly twice as tough as 33s. Why this should be, I'm not sure. I keep hearing about a "find" of 33 cards, but don't have any details - can anybody fill me in? I suspect it was a find of uncut sheets, as Mastro had one in their last auction and I saw a beautiful sheet-cut Ruth at the last Hollywood Park show (the GAI authentic card that just sold on eBay for $1,581).

I've never seen a complete set of either for sale, although I've only been tracking the sets for three years. I was the winner of the Lew Lipset lot. I think they're fantastic cards and way undervalued.
  • Nice pickup. I think you got a great deal on that lot.
  • Thanks, I think so too. image I believe people have their money tied up in Mastro right now.
