<< <i>SAGE is fun until a real product comes out and then it sucks forever. Afteer a few months SAGE and Press Pass are junk. >>
Indeed

On Monday, the ongoing battle between Maurice Clarett and the NFL took another unusual turn.
A federal appeals court blocked a lower court ruling that would have made some underclassmen (namely Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams) eligible for this weekend’s NFL draft. Although there is the possibility of an injunction this week that could allow the players to return to eligibility again, the flip flop of decisions will end when the Draft begins Saturday.
What does this mean for collectors and the hobby? The two players in question are tied together in terms of Draft eligibility but have different stories to tell in terms of “card’ eligibility.
Mike Williams signed the General Licensing Agreement with Players Inc. after the initial ruling was handed down allowing all underclassmen into the Draft. This means that Williams has contractually allowed his image to be used on trading cards and other collectibles in 2004.
Press Pass will release the first Mike Williams licensed cards this Wednesday. Both Press Pass Football and Press Pass Signature Edition contain autographs, base cards, and insert cards of Mike Williams from USC. Press Pass SE has two versions of his autograph: bronze with school logo and Class of 2004 auto #'d to 200 (shown at right). Press Pass Football has the bronze with school logo version only. Press Pass SE has a release date of May 5th.
Clarett's situation is somewhat different, since he has not signed the GLA, but did sign a separate deal with SAGE. The manufacturer's first brand of cards, SAGE HIT, went live on Monday and includes 10 different Maurice Clarett cards.
"I guess we have him exclusively by default because he signed with us directly and hasn't signed his Group Licensing Agreement," SAGE President Tom Geideman was quoted as saying on ESPN.com. "Having a player of the magnitude of Maurice is huge."
As of Tuesday, Clarett had filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court asking for a stay of a federal appeals court's decision from 24 hours earlier preventing the former Ohio State tailback from being in this weekend's draft.
