ohmygosh!! Two early Jeffs in MS69!!!

Last time I looked at the on-line PCGS Pop Report it said there were only a couple of early Jefferson nickels that had ever been graded MS68. Now I see there are two in MS69!!!! imageimageimageimage -- a 1939-D reverse of 1940 (wow!) and a 1940-P. Both are non-Full Steps.

Does anybody know any details about these coins? My brain is still trying to imagine what an MS68 looks like; MS69 just doesn't compute at all.
When in doubt, don't.

  • Wow!!! That is a shocking development when, for many dates, MS66 is as good as it gets!

I would really, really doubt that these are MS68 crackouts, either!

  • Methinks shifting grading standards are the culprit.

    I bet they are mistakes.

Without looking at the pop report: If they are late fifties "P" mint, I'd guess they're really PR69's rather than MS (as stated above: a mistake!).

How could they possibly mistake a 1939-D Reverse of 1940 for a proof? That's what one of the 69s is.

How could a coin without a full strike, i.e. full steps... grade ms69? Sounds ridiculous.
