Ebay Listings - What Is Your Best Find When Description Is Wrong

As probably all do, you do a search and enter keywords when you are looking for sports memorabilia.

But, sometimes someone will enter a description that is not clear and therefore will not be viewed by other people and you can pick up a great item.

For instance. I was looking for a Tatoo Orbit card of a player so I put in Tatoo Orbit. Nothing came up. When I entered Orbit Baseball some nice items came up and I got a deal on a card.

Anyone ever find something really great that wasn't viewed because of the description? And what was it?

  • I've come across a few oddball Gwynns during my search in the past. Misspelled his name in the title "Gywnn" but I caught it when I searched within descriptions as well. Not a 'huge' find, but I was happy since it helped me add to my Gwynn set!

A "1961FLeer" Football set instead of 1961 Fleer when I first started on eBay, i was the only bidder for $99.00image
  • Yeah, I've seen a few of these too. like instead of 1952 Topps I have seen 195 Topps or 1952 Tops. I think at least a few people keep an eye out for these though, because I have yet to find a deal, but I'll keep looking. image
You spilled WHAT on my 1952 Topps Mantle?!?!?! Doh!!

I search title and description for certain things. I've picked up some great buys in modern rookies that way because the seller lists them like this:
    11 2000 Bowmans Best FB RooKies - All #ed / 1499
    or
10- 00 Playoff Prestige Football ROOKIE RC Set lot !

Misspellings are good. Certain names lend themselves to being botched. We won't even get into what happens to Yastrzemski.

My best find was a Score Rookie Autographs Jerry Porter (sells on eBay for $12 to $15) for $1 plus cheap shipping from a 0 feedback seller who called it Score Jerry Porter rookie. The same seller also had a '60 Morrell Meats Don Drysdale card (in about G condition, which sells for $10 or so) for $1 plus cheap shipping, with the title of 1960 Drysdale card.

Sellers who run words together help me a lot. So do those who forget to list PSA in the title of a PSA graded card (but include a scan visible from the category page).
Here was one good recent one for me:
    1958TOPPS EARLY WYNN #100B YELLOW TEAM HBV75

BTW, it's Tattoo Orbit. Searching Tatoo will only bring up the misspelled ones.

  • Similar to Nick, I found a 1951Topps (words run together) Blue back panel Lopat/Mize SGC 96 for $200.00. SMR on Lopat was $150 and on Mize $450, and the chances of getting a mint BLUE back panel are extremely slim--last time I looked, PSA had only graded about 20 of these panels in any grade, no Lopat/Mize, and 2 PSA 9. I figure it is a $2000.00 panel at least.
And to think that it was I who found it, thereby confirming the blind squirrel finds an acorn expression image

  • I once won a 1952 psa 8 that was listed as a 1959 psa 8. I found it by accident, nobody else bid on it, and there was no reserve.

Ive also had luck (although again I stumbled onto it by accident) with cards listed as 64topps or toppspsa and so on.

Just a few times, but enough to make it fun.

This is by no means a steal, or a find, but this seller has just about got everything WRONG about this card!

1946 ? Topps No. 4343, Johnny Pesky, NR

    1946 Topps?
    No. 4343?
At least he got the name on the card right!

BTW, how did I find this? I did a search for "1946 Topps", hoping someone was selling a 1964 Topps card but transposed the 4 and the 6. Most likely that's what this person did, even though the card is really a '63.
  • Gotta admit, that last post about the Pesky is pretty darn funny. I mean, if you want to sell something, you should at least know a little more than just the name....
  • search for "psa9" or "psa10"

    found numerous deals that way

that same guy shows other cards as 1962 that are really 63's why he thinks the pesky is a 46 is beyond belief image
    Good for you.

Here are a few more of my steals over the years:

    Duke Derringer photo card
The card was a '36 Goudey that looked like a candidate for a PSA 7. The seller was a stamp dealer who had a consignment of '30s material, all of which he listed in that fashion. Of course, he didn't understand how to pack cards for mailing, so almost everything I got from him got wrinkles that weren't in the (large and clear) scans, including that one.

    MVP Gold Rookie!!!
The card was a 2003-04 Upper Deck MVP gold parallel #/100 rookie of T.J. Ford. I got it for $4 plus shipping, while others of it that were properly labelled were going for about $10 plus shipping at the time.

    1963 Pepsi-Cola two-card hang tag
They are 1963 Tulsa Oilers. Good luck finding an intact panel.

I don't even want to think about how many lots of PSA (or raw) cards with superstars included don't do anything to break out the particular players in the title, or in some cases even in the description. dslsports is especially bad this way (or good, from my financial perspective).

One guy was selling a mint 1996 Aston Martin, but he mistakenly had it listed as a 1996 Curtis Martin. I won a new car for $4!

    1975 YAZ PSA 8 for $4.99
collecting '67 & '75 red sox + baseball HOF autographs

When Topps 206 came out there were I think 1 or 2 sheets produced with blank backs. No big deal, blank backs are not-extremely-rare printing errors, but the emphasis on back variations in that set caused several collectors to actively seek them out. I got a McGraw blank back for $2 because it was listed as Heritage instead of Topps 206.
