A New 1956 Topps BB Basic Set - 100% Complete

Please pardon the self-promotional spam, but I wanted to say that I just finished and recently registered my latest project, a 1956 Topps BB Basic set. Right now it shows up as lacking one card, but I just added the final one - a PSA 6 Whitey Lockman #205, which is strictly a placeholder and which I will blow out as soon as someone sells me a better one!

The set is 100% with a 7.71 GPA, which ties it for 10th place with the Ron Hobbs set. All of the heavy hitter cards are 8's. I don't chase 9's in vintage, but my goal is to eventually get to 8.00 over the next year, and with only 33 PSA 7's in the set, that ought to be doable.

Thanks much to MikeWrobel, and also to 707, Champs, and Natex for their help!

Now if someone would only sell me a PSA 7 or PSA 8 1957 #121 Clete Boyer, the only card I need to finish my 1957 set, then life would be even better!!

Steve

    Steve;

Congratulations! The 56 set is a beauty! Very nice accomplishment to finish it. I am looking way up at you in that registry! Hope one day to have a straight 8 set as well!

    Steve,

    Congratulations !!!image

That is s big accomplishment.I am bouncing between 20th and 26th on the set registry with a GPA of 8.10. I am taking my time and figure that it will take me at least another year or so.What is your next big challenge ? Is your Orioles team card an 8 or 7 ? If you have been tracking this card, then you are aware of the big drop in the closing prices for this card in the last few sales. If not,the last three sales on this card were approximately $1800,$1200,and $640. Amazing drops,Huh? It might become somewhat affordable at that rate.

Congrats. Nice accomplishment. Hard to believe a set of that quality lands you in tenth place. It shows the depth of pockets involved with the hobby.

Hi Steve, Great job on your set. Perhaps some day when I win the lottery, I be able to buy 8s. As for now, I'll take 7s anyday. Good luck upgrading a truely beautiful set. P.S. I don't have a #205 or it would have been your's. As you upgrade, let me know what you have for sale. Neil

  • Vic,

I don't have plans for any new sets right now. I'm going to finish my 1959 and 1973 sets (both in the low 70's of completion), and continue to upgrade my 1956 and 1957's until they get to 8.0. I'm also thinking about upgrading my 1975 set.

A dealer friend has been bugging me to get my raw 1952 Topps set graded, but I have been putting it off, figuring I would rather spend the grading fees on cards. The Mantle, Pafko, Mays, and some high #'s are already graded, but still, that's a lot of $.

Great Job Steve....how long did it take you to build it? Did you start from scratch or did you have a nice raw set to start from?

  • Hi Folks,

Thanks for the good words. Mike, right now I am 100% on the following Topps sets: 1956, 1957 (OK, OK, I know it's 99.75, lacking only the Boyer, but to me it's 100%!), 1972, 1974, and 1975, plus 4 different player sets. I'm currently working on 1959 and 1973, both are in the low 70% completion range.

I am also 100% on all of the Kellogg's set between 1970 and 1983 except for 1975 (lacking only 1 card) and 1979 (a real toughie of a set). I recently completed the 1981 K set with the great help of Stump, who sold me his 1/1 PSA 9 Winfield.

John, I have to admit I did not start from scratch on this one, but instead bought a ton of cards from Mike Wrobel. I already had lots of the stars in high grade to begin with. In addition to my graded sets, I do have a complete run of each set produced by all makers between 1948 and 1990, but those will remain ungraded with the possible exception of my 1952 Topps set.

Thanks to all, and again, if anyone has a spare 1957 #121 Clete Boyer in PSA 7 or PSA 8, please LMK - I can make it worth your while!

Awesome job again, Steve. Do you need an adult son to adopt?
  • Dave - If you own a 1957 PSA 8 #121 Clete Boyer, then I'll strongly consider it...

C'mon Dad . . . I need a little more of the unconditional love from you.
  • Sorry Dave,

I'm sure you have heard of "tough love", so don't make me go to a PSA 9 Boyer....
