The SPX and the dual sig autos almost look like they were signed by two different people, unbelievable!

I've always wondered what would happen if Topps or UD offered to double the amount paid for each autograph so long as you could actually read the auto. They could call the product 'UD Legible Exlusives', or something like that.

I bet there'd be a strong market for it. I really do. Collectors just have to getting fed up with these little scribbles on the cards they paid 500 bucks for.

I pointed this issue out in another thread. I'll bet if you found some examples of his autograph from 2 years ago, when he was on SI, it would look different too. Personally, I think he's trying to copy Jordan, and make his signature look like a "23." You can see it evolve in his signature; at first it was somewhat subtle, and was reasonably cute, he's a good kid, it's OK. Now he isn't even trying. He's just like Vick, scribble some initials and a number. In Lebron's case he doesn't even have to write the second number since he has turned the "LB" into a "23".

This is the reason it's more fun to either A.) collect older players that still have a beautiful signature after ~70 years, broken fingers (check out Bednarik's signature some time, it's consistent and looks nice), and shaky hands; or B.) get the VERY first autograph of a player before he gets jaded and turns his signature into a scribble.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

I look at the SPX Rookie one and can only think of Bo Bo the Bear from the Simpsons.....

I agree - some guys just maintain a healthy signature and others...well just change. Then there are other reasons like Roy Campanella who was in an auto accident in the prime of his career - believe he played thru the 57 season - his paralysis made signing with a brace a chore - pre-accident autos are a premium as you can see with this PSA/DNA authen. item that sold for a bit of change on ebay.

  • How can someone authenticate a signature when the player signs so many different ways?

by watching him sign his name.

He could sign with the pen between
his toes, but if they witness him sign
then they can "authenticate" that it is his.
