Thank You PSA/Joe Orlando

Greetings -

I am new to these boards and also recently once again took up card collecting. The collection begins with any Philadelphia sports team, any 1959 card from any sport or team, and also Mays, Aaron and Clemente from all years.

In trying to finance my collection I buy and sell on speculation, mostly boxes hoping to score the good card that will sell for a good price.
In monitoring the posts on these boards I'm really dismayed to see how many less than reputable sellers are on Ebay and what is being done to make a buck. Thank you to those who alert us to these guys. I found that I had bought from one of them, but the card purchased was not altered.

My reason for jumping into the board is to thank PSA, and especially Joe Orlando for a great example of customer service. I have not had too many cards graded, maybe 12 at most, the free submissions from the Collector's Club. Now that I am selling I hope to grade many more.

I recently acquired a vintage card of one of the stars mentioned above and the year I collect. The card looked great in the scan on Ebay. When I received the card it looked just as good, so I included it the latest round of Club submissions. The card came back with a 5 grade and I did not agree. I had been all over this card with a loupe, scanned it myself, and made notes on the condition.

Sent it back to PSA, to the attention of Joe Orlando along with a 6 EX-MT example of another card graded a few years ago, and a letter explaining my position. In due time I received a voice mail from Joe explaining that they would raise the card to a 6, and giving a reason why it did not make a 7 which was my position. It's really great to get a personal response and see that a company is willing to work with their customers. Thank you again.

The real lesson for me in this story is this - I had planned to sell the card hoping to make a good profit, even though it is one of the stars I collect. The book value of the grade I received is lower than what I paid.

Now I have decided to keep it and that's really why we all do this right? I'll make the money on the cards that hold no sentimental value, but don't think I will ever again purchase a card that would normally go in my collection with the intent to sell it.

Thanks for the welcome. Will keep a good perspective on the replies, knowing that there are many opinions out there.

Saw Mike Schmidt two nights ago managing the Clearwater Threshers, Phils A league team against our local Twins affiliate. He was not signing autos and stayed in the dugout. Some people were not impressed. I had heard that he doesn't sign often. His team is struggling.

Spigrimace - in sell mode at the moment. Maybe we can talk in a few weeks. Thanks.

I too bear a close resemblance.

Flew back home for the NFC Championship at the Linc last January. Only a rabid fan who has lived in 80 degree weather for 15 years would bear the 20's for several days just to see their team. The outcome was dissapointing but I enjoyed cheering so much that I lost my voice for three days. The Philly fan is the best despite what they say about our lack of patience and compassion. Only saw one fight and it was between two women, go figure.

The wife now wants to move to Philly, having grown up here in South FL. She talks about the abundance of culture and architecture. I cite the lack of bikini clad women, including her, and the cold weather. At the moment it's a draw.

Keeping the thread in line with card talk, I will throw out a question. Bought some boxes of Score Hockey years ago, 91-92 I think. They are the Canadian version, English but Canadian flag on the back. Pulled many Lindros cards from these boxes but can't find a listing for this series. Any ideas? The numbers do not match the US series. The Lindros is #428 or 429 I think. A white Draft Pick card with him sitting down in front of some jerseys.

Also just recently found a sealed box of 90-91 Score Hockey at a flea market. Bought it with a box of 91-92 for $6. Should I break open the box or sell it as is?

I really don't get into hockey cards, except the Flyers so I don't have a clue.

Welcome to the boards ... there is a lot of great advice and insight to be had, even from stinkin Giant fans.

There are more card shows up here, so consider that too!

Welcome and nice going on your upgrade. You will fit in well with your open mind on the points of view expressed here. BTW, I lived in Philly for six months, was supposed to go to Temple and wound up at Columbia in NYC. Beside sports which I love, two things: soft pretzels and Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches! That says it all! The best! Good luck.

You guys are lucky to have a great show like that to attend - the NE is way better than some areas. There's practically zero in San Antonio!

i just dont understand why people would want to live so far up north.

the weather alone is depressing. Tell your wife to drive around the new design district and see the amazing architecture that its going on there and then eat at trendy lincon road in a 5 star restaurant right infront of an art gallery. and if you have kids ..disney world is just 3 hours away

and besides ...the phillies are 0-4 vs the marlins so far.

    8th Street -

We are on the Southwest FL coast, and the area is just beginning to grow into what it should be.

Won't tell the wife about your Marlins comment, since she is a Yankees fan. She moved here when she was 8 from North Jersey. Saw Game 4 or 5 of the Series last year. Great just to see a Series game live.

For some reason she always makes me go to visiting cities to see her teams play, the Yanks and the 49ers (a "he's so cute" Montana throwback who has never been west of the Mississippi). With my Philly mentality I wind up buying a home team hat or shirt so that we can offset the remarks from the homer fans. It works.

As for the Phillies.....see you in September amigo.

Here is the CHECKLIST. 91-92 Score Canadian had 2 series of 330 cards each, whereas the American had the base set of 440 plus the 110-card Rookie/Traded set. Not much of value other than rookies of Hasek and Leclair, plus the Lindros cards, and we're only talking a buck or two at most. This was a highly overproduced set.

As for the 90-91, I recently busted 6 boxes with disappointing results: got about 7 cards each of Nolan, Roenick, Lindros, Sundin, etc, but only 4 Brodeur rookies, and only 1 of which could be gradable image Again, nothing worth a heck of a lot, unless you manage to pull a PSA10/BGS9.5 Brodeur. If I were you, I'd just bust the box for the fun of it... you won't get much for the box as is anyway.

    SoFL,

i went for a weekend to marco island and its beautiful over there ...the beaches are amazing, blast white sand, friendly people.

the west coast of florida still has some ways to go to become a major city and a lot more time to become a metropolis...but thats whats nice about it ...laid back, cheap housing and decent pay.

BTW how much do the phillies spend ...80 , 90 mill a year...thats just sad

Thanks phreak. Looked for a long time for this list.
At least now I know what it is.
Was wrong about the boxes - they are Pro Set.
Broke open the 91, the French version.
The 90 is still sealed and is English.
  • phreakydancinphreakydancin Posts: 1,691 ✭✭
ProSet hockey cards are virtually worthless, French or not. Bust away for the fun of it, but don't expect to make any money.

90-91 was perhaps the ugliest sportscard set ever produced, and was plagued by statistical errors.
91-92 was actually quite attractive, but completely lacking in decent rookies. Again, Hasek + Leclair, but not much else.
  • This is way off topic, but the wife is considering a job offer in the Destin/Pensacola area. Anyone have any first hand input into what its like there other than what I can find on the internet, she is going down in 2 weeks for an interview.

The Panhandle is nice, closer to old FL and the South US. Some people call the Panhandle "Eastern Alabama".
Pensacola is pretty active given that it's a Navy town.

One thing to consider - hurricanes and other tropical storm activity. That's the focus of my profession and I encourage anyone living in FL to make sure that they are prepared and educate themselves about the risk. We pay a price to live in the sun.

I actually have a case(!) of this stuff, believe it or not. In 1991, I had some money laying around and was collecting hockey, so I bought a case. Paid $12/box for it. I am bound and determined that somehow, someday, I will get my $$$$ back on that. LOL.

That said, no way is that the ugliest sportscard set. How soon we forget 1981 Fleer image

Done! Oh wait, that Whitaker isn't actually mine image That thar Whitaker just happened to be the first 1981 Fleer I came across on the Beckett site that had a picture with it, LOL.

For the record, I'm a big Tigers fan, wasn't trying to diss Sweet Lou by including that particular card!

Just for laughs you can check these two items on the Bay. One auction is active, the other is not. Also have tons of Tigers from 85 to present, the result of a recent box busting binge.

Welcome on board. Many twists and turns in this thread, but there is one missing and I can't help but add it: EVERYONE GATHER UP THEIR QUESTIONABLE GRADED CARDS AND SENT THEM DIRECTLY TO JOE ORLANDO. HE IS SITTING THERE POUNDING HIS CATCHER'S MITT WAITING FOR THEM, AND BITING HIS NAILS WHILE READING THIS THREAD.

Laughing faces go here, but I don't know how to do it.

I just got back from Disney (more work than vacation) and I could see myself living in S. Florida. My wife and I have talked about fleetingly, but could never move more than a few hours away from the relatives.

Plus, I would have to fly back 8 weekends in the fall to watch the Birds.

Jay - we open with a win over the G-Men

  • 1420 - it's nice here and I don't miss the rush hour traffic. My office is six miles from home and I complain when it takes five minutes longer during tourist season. The season has just about ended and my condo complex is clearing out since most of the owners are seasonal and over 60.

Yes, certainly a win over the Giants in the first game, and I really look forward to the grudge match against Carolina on Oct. 17. The Linc should be rockin' on that Sunday.

Hopefully they will play well - I will make the trip back for the playoffs next year for sure.
  • 1420 - strange, we just got back from Disney a little bit ago. All pleasure, no business
    - but we noticed a couple corporate parties going on today. It was busier than usual for a WED.

Welcome SoFLPhillyFan - from Lake Mary just North of Orlando.
Not too hot, not to cold here. Lived in SOFL a long time. A little too hot and crowded for me.
But I can see the appeal - lived near Tampa a long time too. I liked that.

  • Used to have some good ones in the old days, early 90s. But no, not one good show comes though the Sunshine State.
The World of Collectibles that ran last January was a real bomb. PSA was there and that was the highlight.

Some locals came out and I was glad to meet them but that was it.
