I'm not a Morgan expert, so I won't comment on the merits of the coin. As for the auction: the back story, the purported dealer comments, the short run time, and especially the lack of any return privelege all scream "stay away".

  • This should be interesting. To me it looks awesome but i've been "educated" by the experts on this board many times before about altered surface coins.

altered surf's is 1 thing, but the whole danged surface has been stripped right off the obv. of that coin!

What about this coin? LINK I am bidding on it but it also looks a little 'different'.
  • The second one looks "different" to me too. My guess is that, at the least, all life has been dipped off that coin. Maybe it too has been polished?
  • both auctions send up red flags

Interesting auction. The pictures look like two different coins. The
coin seems to indicate proof from the polished surfaces and the
cameo look on the obv. But why is the rev. so lackluster? Storage?
The seller's other auctions are not coin items but he seems to be
an established seller. I would avoid this auction based on the
lack of a return policy and the apparent inexperience of the seller.
For all practical purposes, you just don't know what you are getting
    here.

  • I'd certainly avoid the 1893. The obverse has been stripped clean.

The 1904 sends up some red flags, notably the no-return policy, but the coin looks original to my non-expert eye. Very nice. A couple of nicks on the rims at 7:00 and 9:00 on the reverse. Put it this way, flyingcougar...it's worth going higher than the current $66 bid, but don't get carried away.

Hmmm.... Check out this past auction by the same seller? Check out the dark spot near the "I" in Liberty, same coin?
