Beckett slams PRO grading well sort of?

I recently got my copy Beckett Sports Collectibles (VINTAGE) and buried deep in the middle is a section devoted to listing auction results. Well on this page beckett tries to slam PRO grading. IT was pretty funny. They tried to be very subtle. IT was entitled Not All 10 are Created Equal or something to that effect. They went on to say how people do not have confidence in PRO and that it is reflected in the prices that are paid for say a Gem Mint 10 graded by PSA or one graded by PRO. I guess thay are trying to inform people of the problem which is a good thing. I just thought since no one else said anything I would share this. I just know how everybody just loves beckett around here.

None of the quality grading companies want to get into a direct shooting match over who is legit and who isn't for fear of looking biased and potential litigation. We had a discussion about this just recently. Who's grading the graders. We talked about independent 'watch-dogs' to check on their quality, accuracy etc. In fact I had found one site but did not trust their judgement due to the fact that they put hi grades on ASA which has a checkered track record.

    What do ya think?

  • Hello,

I concur with your assesment that cardgraders.com is not even close to being a good judge of the current card graders. I have been reading all of the thread about this subject and I just wanted to put this out there so the people that have been talking about this could see that a little something is being done to inform the collecting public about off brand graders.

  • Personally, I find the following site to be a pretty good judge of grading companies:

I also saw a full page ad that PRO took out in that very same Beckett
    Good for you.

  • << <i>I also saw a full page ad that PRO took out in that very same Beckett >>

that seems a little like ABC adverstising on NBC to me?
Why would beckett sell ads to
    competing grading companies?
Would they allow PSA to do a full page ad?

Troy, why did you edit out your epic rants? I was looking forward to reading those again this morning.

No such details will spoil my plans...

  • I would guess the profanity, racist remarks, woman bashing, and praise for islamic countries was the reason why he editted the posts. or the fact that talking to himself made him look a little loopy.

    Ah yes, PRO grading.

The absolute KINGS of grading trimmed cards. I made the mistake a few years back of sending in a small stack of $5 & $10 football rc's (they were running a 5 day $5 special) Most of the grades were pretty fair I thought, so I figured I would buy some cards at auction with the intent of crossing them over to one of the other guys. I was also trying SGC at the time.

I picked up a half dozen or so cards off the bay, mostly from different sellers. After cracking them out of their cases I submitted them to PSA...Stop me if you know where this is going...

Yup, you guessed it, 4 of the 6 came back "Evidence of Trim" one came back "Questionable Authenticity" (I think that's the verbage on the label)

So, 93 SP Bledsoe Trimmed PRO 9.8 Near Gem
94 SP Faulk Trimmed Pro 10
98 SPA Moss Pro Trimmed 9.8
2000 SPx Jamal Lewis Trimmed Pro 10

98 SP Auth Fred Taylor Pro 10 PSA 9 'Of course the one card that does well is now junk.

Of course I wholeheartedly disagreed with the grades and waited for them to get to me. Then I noticed, the bledsoe especially, I could've fit two of them on a regular card. I bet this thing was almost a 1/4" short T/B & L/R. I just didn't even pay attention. I knew it was too good to be true. That seller offered to refund my money ($55 I think). Problem was, I bought and paid for a PRO 9.8 SP Bledsoe and I, in fact received a Pro 9.8 Bledsoe. he claims he didn't trim it but... So that card is tacked to a cork board in my room as a reminder NEVER TO BUY PRO!!!

    Just my .02

I have never bought anything from them, but I assumed they were kinda "fly by night" Same with WGC. Home shopping network has more Gem 10 Bonds cards than any company I've ever seen. I didn't realize there were so many perfect copies of his 87 donruss and 87 topps! I guess you have to be HSN to get the really good stuff. image

Obviously pretty much everyone here is a PSA rube in one form or another, I am curious to know what people think about some of the other grading companies. Or what people have heard about them.

    For example.

SGC --Seem to have a pretty good rep with both the vintage and the modern crowds.

    BGS --Modern only?

BVG --yeah, a joke, we know

    GAI --Gaining popularity?

    CTA --Hmm...

    GEM --Joke...

  • BKAH,

Beckett runs fullpage ads of SGC and PSA all thru the magazine. The entire back cover is a PSA ad.

I like AGS (Advanced Grading Service)

They have awesome holders. They are scratch resistant, strong, compact, and you can view what card it is because it is also labeled on the top edge of the holder--very classy.

Their grading and scale is just like PSA.

  • I like AGS as well. Not too bad and fairly cheap.

Not to be confused with ASS though. They stink, and have crappy service!

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?
